Typical Fender input schematics show a pair of 34 k resistors with a 1 meg resistor to deck, reducing the 1 meg input impedance of the following stage in order to control vulnerability to noise. From memory a strat single coil pickup is around 6.8k. If you want an ideal impedance match to that picku...

I spent a night last week experimenting with a kick port. After lots of tuning and dampening trials I ended up with a towel and a lightweight woolen blanket (aircraft style, very thin). The effect of the kick port is best heard a a bit of a distance. I ended up with the "outside" mic about 18" away ...

Once you work with a scope for a while there's lots of stuff it's handy for, and similarly to a spectrum analyser, once you get used to how things "look" when they sound right, can be a valuable diagnostic tool. Awesome for getting things in phase (multiple mics etc) not just in terms of using a pha...

I had a radio station manager explain to me recently that the station was in the process of replacing all the content of their library of recordings with a minimum of 320 kbps MP3s. The reasoning behind this he said was that the resolution of FM stereo was in the vicinity of 280 kbps. Any material t...

Has anybody else besides me tried this out yet? Makes me really jealous that I'm not in RTAS world. Also, maybe there is already posts on the TOMB for these, but I really like the free airwindows plugs: http://store.kagi.com/cgi-bin/store.cgi?storeID=6FEGJ_LIVE&& I am a Massey plugins user, and am ...

Audioboffin, how do you respond to the Shure article referenced earlier (http://tinyurl.com/el9bh) which basically goes so far as to suggest that with modern circuitry, impedance matching can negatively affect your sound and it hasn't been a concern since 1804 or whatever? That article is bugging m...

I wonder if a single PM1000 channel strip module could be coerced into operating independently? A PM 1000 channel would be great for this purpose and make a very worthy studio piece for a looong time. By the way the input impedance of a Fender twin or Marshall JMP guitar amp is 68k, which perfectly...

The best way to fix this is to use a noise reduction plug-in. Hmmm.. gating and/or using something like Sound Replacer will decrease the apparent level of the undesired sound in the mix, but really a good drum recording is reliant firstly on the player, then the cymbals and drums and then the gear ...

You may need to adjust the trim level in and or out of the EQ if you are going to use a LOT of it.

I have several of each of these microphones, and the 2020 in particular has a pronounced HPF that seems to counter proximity effect, meaning it is great to use up close, but not so full sounding at a distance. To be honest neither mic would be my first choice as a room mic generally, but they do off...
