I never use a bottom snare mic, but I almost always use a mic under the snare. fully aware that i'm wasting as much time as i felt you and i wasted on grammar.....but is that really necessary? everyone knows that the title, "snare bottom mic" means snare-bottom mic. ...but i'll make sure to do that...

Indeed. I love my i5 in the studio but live I often find myself putting it up, frowning, swapping in a 57, and smiling.
If you are positioning the i5 as you would a 57, then you'll never like it. It takes some experimentation, but it's worth it.

Ryan Silva wrote:It seems that most people when going for a dynamic have better options. SM7, RE20, 421, 441. But except for the 441 the 57/58 are the only hypers. So when you are looking for really good isolation, they seem to be the best choice.
Huh?

The SM57/58 are cardioid. The 441 is supercardioid.

Also, make sure that you're flipping the polarity of the bottom mic, so that you're not canceling the frequencies that give you the punch that you're after. Unless, of course, it isn't necessary. Depending on mic positioning, reversing polarity on the bottom can also cause MORE cancellation. Listen...

Recording bass through a Princeton is a really great idea. Lacking a Princeton, any small, decent sounding guitar combo should do.

looks like a 431 to me, u know the middle sibling between a 421 and a 441? Maybe it's just the same mic with different badges. Marketed to different segments. Shure did this with their unidyne models and SM models. There are other examples I am sure. A Sennheiser MD-431 looks similar, specifically ...

Whether or not it's a good idea aside, the Rane G4 quad gate is pretty great. The "look-ahead" thing means no more lost transients.

well, SOMEBODY has to make sure that EVERYTHING written on the internets is true. ;) all joking aside. i do appreciate when people correct you in a respectful manner, instead of the usual message board crucifixion that happens all too often...especially in such a gear oriented field where an added ...

I'm a fan of the CAD Trion stuff - T-6000 multi-pattern LDC or T-7000 dual-element ribbon are both pretty close to your budget. AT 4050 is always a good choice, as well.

Sharpie directly on scribble strip. Comes off perfectly with a little acetone. Did this for years and the strip still looks like new.

But now that I'm on a Digi Profile, I just use the [Backspace] key.

As above, APB Dynasonics is composed of the guys from Crest, who escaped when Peavey took over. Really excellent live consoles, as were the pre-Peavey Crest consoles. It'll be interesting to see what they can do for the recording market.

On the one hand, listen with your ears, not your eyes.

On the other hand, I have never heard any evidence to support the rabid support these mics receive on the PSW LAB.
