I agree. Replacing opamps first is a stupid move when the rest of the board is crummy. I know, cause that is exactly what I did!

And yes the power supply is not up to snuff. I was thinking about what to do but you convinced me to go external.

Just to get an idea of the questions that jump around in my mind, do you guys/gals think new mics would benefit my sound? Well they could, not saying they will for sure; if you feel the urge to buy stuff, by all means do. But the real question is, have you really tried to get the most out of what y...

Hi, welcome "on board", if I may say so... It's a marriage-wrecking occupation, if you want my opinion! but mine was really worn out and needed complete overhaul. Anyway, so far I have done the power supply, all 16 channels+master L/R, that is: repaired burned parts, recap, replaced pan pots, added ...

I listened to it with headphones. I liked it, I would listen to it at home. Good tune. Good job rendering the live feel with minimal miking. I do not mind the vocals, I would certainly not try to autotune them, I think they are fine as is. I do however mind a few timing glitches in the intro. If you...

There is the free VST plugin JB Ferox that emulates tape saturation. I found it pretty useful. Google for it, you will find it easily.

What? 5 pages of comments and no mention of de Palma's Phantom of the Paradise? Best rock opera ever?

and The Harder they Come, featuring breathtaking performance by Jimmy Cliff?

Nice tracks. Just a couple thoughts: Be careful about the playing. On Moongooses and Motorik I have noticed timing issues, esp. the drums. Can't possibly sound big if playing is sloppy. Edit the tracks or retrack. The room doesn't sound too great either. Try to find a better location and try to impr...

Hi, I own a Series 5 16-8-2. All Studiomasters were English made as far as I know. Crap? It's a personal opinion. I don't know where you are coming from. All I can say is that (except maybe for the bigger models) they are budget small studio English boards from the 80s, so don't pay real money for o...

And if you are in Europe, you should definitely look into Beyers. You can easily find a used M69 for pocket money. (Got one off ebay for EUR40) Its a fantastic microphone that sounds warm like a SM7 but has a hot output and a hypercardioid pattern. The amount of side and back rejection is unbelievab...

Yes. US gear costs twice as much in Europe generally so a brand new SM7 sells for like EUR 550 ($700 or something). I bought a Gibson bass last year EUR2300, when the same model was selling for $1500 (in the usa). But exclusive distribution arrangements made it impossible to order one direct from th...

Hi in old tube equipment, carbon resistors in plate circuits tend to go high as they age. That 270k resistor could be out of specs. Measure it with an ohmmeter and see if it is above its nominal value + tolerance (10 or 20% was common back then, look at the resistor, silver band=10%, no fourth band=...

Bo Diddley (1928-2008)

Bo Diddley passed away on Monday. May he rest in peace. He was one of my heroes, one of the greatest rock n roll artists along with Chuck Berry and Little Richard. I am sad.

It's mostly a self confidence issue. the feeling of apprehension usually goes away after a few takes but unfortunately, most of the time, only the first few takes are fresh and interesting. To get the most out of these people, it often pays, if you can do it, to be extra nice, reassuring, comforting...

That is what I do. I could not face working with a computer. So I have an analog mixer, hardware effects and I record on a Fostex D-108. I love it. It's an old 8 track hard disk recorder that uses IDE hard disks. It feels like a tape deck but without the hassle. Rock solid, good sounding and cheap t...

That's called "assloads of compression" Sounds like an La3a set to "stun" to my ears. Although it really works for me on some of the more uptempo stuff, I think the slower, more sparse arrangements were given a great disservice I agree. A bit too much compression throughout, and a bit overengineere...
