Re: Pro Tools -9173 errors

http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/en_US/compatibility/Pro-Tools-ran-out-of-CPU-power-9173 This is due to a CPU spiking and messing up PTs operation. Check: That you leave ONE CPU for the operating system. Change how many CPUs you allow PT to use in your preferences. Trash preferences and reboot the...

Re: recording group vocals

How do you guys like to record stuff like this? I have done a few of these type of recordings, with amateur singers. Usually, I only do up to two passes maximum, and the last time I remember having them in a semicircle in front of a U47 in cardioid pattern, and yes, moving them closer / further awa...

Radiohead loves Neve stuff for recording. They also recorded their biggest album at Ocean Way LA,
side bar... You consider HAIL TO THE THIEF their biggest album? Bigger than OK COMPUTER? KID A or IN RAINBOWS?
I love all their work... hard to compare each.

Re: Time for some home studio upgrades...help me spend $10K

NEVE. Try to buy one pair of decent Neve mic preamps / EQs, (see Heritage Audio / BAE erc. for new less expensive clones). Don't bother with the AMS Neve 500 series stuff, they suck ass. The good stuff is 19" rackmount.See the brands above for super nice clones for less money. Radiohead loves Neve s...

Re: Ribbon dilemma.

If the buzz/noise happens when you touch the mic, without moving it at all, then it is a wiring issue. Did you change the mic cable? If you did and it still does this, did you change the mic preamp? If you did that, and it still does this, are there other devices in the signal chain? Once you determ...

Re: Problem balancing level of multiple monitors

I have the same setup, a DIY monitor switch between two sets of powered speakers. To calibrate your set, you'll have to figure out each one's loudness range on its own, with a SPL meter and pink noise. Once you know their range individually, you can then decide how to set each one's switches. There ...

Re: How long does everyone keep the boxes your gear came in?

I usually keep one or two boxes for single space rack size stuff, in case I sell something or need it repaired.

Otherwise, one year for new stuff, then it gets recycled.

Cheers!

Carpal Tunnel Surgery

I am finally getting it done tomorrow.

This thing kept coming and going, until last October 2019 it decided to stay.

Will report progress.

Any recommendations for an all-around channel strip?
Thanks!
These are great and not horrifically expensive for what they are.

Don't waste your money on the ones you mention.

Re: connecting turntable to console

My Stanton USB turntable has the RIAA EQ curve correction built in.
It has both phono and line outs, along with digital USB output, mirroring the line out.

Cheers.

Re: connecting turntable to console

Some consoles can accept this type of input. consult your manual. In my case, my Allen & Heath 8200 series can accept anything in the line input, from pro level, to guitars, to turntables. Found out the long way (not reading the manual LOL), so I had gotten a Radial Stereo DI to connect between them...

Re: Upping my vocal recording skills

Some tips: 1. One mic for the singer, a different mic for all the BGs. 2. Backing harmonies, try having them sing together. It will take a little longer to nail, but once they do, oh my. 3. Have the band in the room or control room while recording anything. It helps encourage positive ideas and conv...

Re: Using reverb to differentiate lead and backing vocals

- Does everyone in the mix get the same reverb (i.e. plugin, or box setting, or spring, same model of a room, hall, or plate etc)? - Does the lead get mixed dryer to be in front of some wetter backups, or ever visa versa? - Do you shift decay times and predelay to set these apart? Hi, This is what ...
