Re: Basic home setup advice

Thanks for all the advice, everyone. The next question I'm running into is Thunderbolt vs USB. I'm running a Macbook Pro from 2015, so I can do Thunderbolt, but is it worth the extra cost for such a small setup? Why not audio over IP? Dante? Use the Thunderfart for your audio drives instead of audi...

Any particular A&H or Soundcraft mixers I should be looking for? Aren't some way better than others? Seems to be a buyer's market for used Analog mixers these days.
The 2800 series is good. Also, widely available parts, nothing exotic or weird. So serviceable for the foreseeable future.

Re: Mixing with the band there

I had a couple guys from the band I'm currently working with stop by to go through their notes in real time and make whatever adjustments they wanted. They left happy. Then, of course, I start getting the texts... "wait, can we also do this and that and this and that?" Oi. I'm starting to despise r...

Re: Mixing with the band there

Also, I am mixing totally ITB. Easier recalls, as you see from the other fine engineers here who use outboard. Sometimes I have to print a reamp or some hardware I have. This I always try to do long before mixing, so everyone is used to "that sound" from whatever hardware I used. On a Jazz Fusion mi...

Re: Looking for mixer to pair with Fostex R8

I am a fanboi of Allen & Heath consoles.

Since you have a 8 channel tape machine, I recommend you get a 16 channel (or more) console for mixing etc.

You can NEVER have too many console channels.

Re: reference listening

I carry around a USB thumbstick. That said, when I do have to reference audio, I make SURE the mixes get copied to the studio's drive, and that they play it back off their good professional converters, and not the computers line out or whatever. Otherwise, it is a circle jerk of really unpleasant so...

Re: Basic home setup advice

Go Reaper. If you find it too much, you can also always install Pro Tools First, and then decide which is better for you. Stay the hell away from Ableton Live, Reason, etc. Those are more for electronic music, but can be a pain with live acoustic instruments, editing audio, etc. In Reason, you basic...

+1000 for switching to REAPER. Not only is it awesome, super-customizable software, but just as importantly, it is owned by the same small number of people who do the coding. It's a small company who really cares about their customers. In a world full of ruthless software behemoth companies trying ...

Sort of like this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gYtuz1i8xFg This was done live to 2" tape. Maybe one or two overdubs / small fixes to the electric bass afterwards. The hand claps on this sound perfect. Thanks, as I recall there were two women, Flora Purim, and her daughter Diana, in one of the i...

Re: Mixing an 8 piece band with an edge

On the Fela Kuti stuff (always amazing!):

Sounds to me like 16 tracks, recorded mostly live. Could be less, but the separation is very good.

Looks like he was also the engineer, although I am going to ask my peers, see if anyone knows
any engineers who recorded him at his compound or elsewhere.
