Re: DAW Recording on Mac - Startup drive as storage drive in 2021

I always recommend a separate drive for the work material.

Less stress on the buss master in the motherboard. Less traffic going to and from the system SSD.

Some people think it's ok. Until the SHTF.

Re: Steinberg Nuendo Area

I am mixing my first project on Nuendo at the end of the week. Since I changed my physical setup, my speakers are now a little further away, so I am listening to references every day for one hour, before doing practice mixes. Really love the DAW. Learning to do bussing, as you have to create busses ...

Re: Listen: Jazz drums with modern micing

Tony has a bunch of great-sounding drums and cymbals and he knows what to pick! I had the good fortune to play on a session at his place and used a bunch of his stuff. His big-ass kick drum is a beautiful beast. I've never understood this thing where you HAVE to do minimal miking on stuff for a jaz...

Re: BBE Sonic Maximizer

Many people are saying this special unit is the well-kept secret behind all successful recordings ever made. Really. I remember these things. Hated them. Typically, they were used to "excite" frequencies, because typically, some of those recordings, done to analog tape, were TOTAL SHITE. Too dark, ...

The description reminds me of a multi-band compressor.

EDIT: oh, wait - the second group is without compressor?

So you are kinda doing a frequency-defined parallel thing?
If that was for me, YES. Manual one band compression. LOL.

Re: Side chain filtering for SSL bus comp

With the older units: TWO outputs from the Master buss, One goes to the SSL comp, and you filter out up to whatever low end (maybe also some top end) you did not want going into the SSL. Two goes into a second filter, we normally would use a Stereo EQ for this task, either a GML 8200, or similar. Th...

Re: What are your influences?

My earliest memories are of listening to the Soviet Army Chorus & Band album. Still have that one somewhere around here. At around age three or so, along with a ton of great music my parents played on the regular. They had an actual Pioneer Quad playback system. SO you could sit almost anywhere in t...

From the link to Markertek, they have the specs, under "Data sheets":

I do not see the thickness of the face, which goes into those slots, so I'll measure them for ya later.

Re: Panel mount Neutrik (or other) TRS jack dimensions?

Hey Geoff,

I have some of those Neutrik individual panel connectors down in the studio. I'll measure them later and send over their dimensions.

I'll give you the thickness of the panel as well, to see if they would fit that slotting.

Cheers

Re: M/S guitars and other stuff

I did one for a wonderful singer, but only the acoustic guitar was M/S.

It was acoustic style folk music, so M/S was really good for that style.

Very few additional instruments.

Re: Are the loudness wars over?

If I recall correctly, the loudness wars thing began in earnest with Queen's producer, Roy Thomas Baker. I have heard that it goes back to Duane Eddy & Lee Hazlewood though I now can't find the quote. Could be. The point was, which I had lost, is that the loudness wars were for an analog delivery s...

Then I started to notice Netflix content was dialing back the volume/compression as well.
Netflix has a loudness standard. Steinberg Nuendo has it included with their metering stuff.

Re: hughes srs ak100/stereo enhancers

If you listen in headphones, it's definitely a dramatic effect. To my ears, its not a mono source with effects sent from an aux, with the mono source panned from side to side. To my ears, and this could be due to the psychoacoustic effect of the flanging, it sounds like it starts out in stereo, wit...
