Re: tricks to make stereo pads more interesting in the mix?

I sometimes: 1. Make a pad MONO. Then pan it about. 2. Make it MONO, then put some chorus / flanging / phasing on it, see which one works best. 3. If several pads playing at the same time (MFR!) then pan each one opposite each other. 4. Make certain sounds belong only in certain parts of the song. M...

Re: Apogee Element 24 questions

...I tried running guitars and stuff direct through the m-track 2x2 and it sounds too dry and fake to me. Hi, What are you recording? Yes, those old M Audio things are not stellar, but not to the point of changing your stuff THAT much. ;) As far as the Apogee stuff, it is excellent. Just make sure ...

Re: Your favorite general use eq plugin

Massenburg MDW Massenburg MDW Are you guys referring to the Avid or UAD version? I've yet to try either, tho UA's is the next on my list. I'll probably never get to try Avid's as they don't provide a demo. I not at all surprised by this, as Avid is the asshole of the audio body. Either version is f...

Re: Garageband 10.3.2 Latency w/ M-Track 2x2

Move to Logic Pro.

There, you can change your hardware and software IO buffer settings, therefore altering your
latency.

Cheers

Re: Patchbay plans/expansion to digital

You "MIGHT" need to balance all the Tascam ins and outs with xformers. Not hard to do, but needs to be done to interface with all the balanced equipment. That, or unbalance all the equipment, if it is less work. Also, the speakers need to be normalled (not half normalled) to the Macke Bigh knob, bot...

Re: Pro Tools/Hard Drive playback issue

One of three issues: 1. The hard drive is getting screwy. I have had this happen. The FW port can be going bad, or the drive itself. 2. The FW port on your computer is going bad. Also have had this happen. 3. Pro Tools 7.x and Pro Tools 8.x sometimes had this issue. However, I never saw this on Pro ...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

Brand new MacBook Pro 15".

This thing has 16 CPU cores. DAMN.

Now, to get all artisanal and fancy with the tons of stupid dongle adapters I will have to get to make my obsolete
stuff connect to it. LOL what have I done to myself?

Re: Looking for mixer to pair with Fostex R8

Does anyone know if one of those huge Allen & Heath 40 channel GL2800's can be easily made smaller? It seems like it could just be a matter of unscrewing something and disconnecting a ribbon cable to bring it down to 16-24 channels. Is that something a hack like me could manage? I really don't need...

Re: Basic home setup advice

Thanks for all the advice, everyone. The next question I'm running into is Thunderbolt vs USB. I'm running a Macbook Pro from 2015, so I can do Thunderbolt, but is it worth the extra cost for such a small setup? Why not audio over IP? Dante? Use the Thunderfart for your audio drives instead of audi...

Any particular A&H or Soundcraft mixers I should be looking for? Aren't some way better than others? Seems to be a buyer's market for used Analog mixers these days.
The 2800 series is good. Also, widely available parts, nothing exotic or weird. So serviceable for the foreseeable future.

Re: Mixing with the band there

I had a couple guys from the band I'm currently working with stop by to go through their notes in real time and make whatever adjustments they wanted. They left happy. Then, of course, I start getting the texts... "wait, can we also do this and that and this and that?" Oi. I'm starting to despise r...

Re: Mixing with the band there

Also, I am mixing totally ITB. Easier recalls, as you see from the other fine engineers here who use outboard. Sometimes I have to print a reamp or some hardware I have. This I always try to do long before mixing, so everyone is used to "that sound" from whatever hardware I used. On a Jazz Fusion mi...
