Re: Tracking bands without a console is a PITA!
Oh that’s interesting. I was reading that going Ethernet into the PC and having to the virtual sound card negates some of the benefits of Dante as opppses to using a PCIe card. So that hasn’t been your experience? I can get 4 mS roundtrip latency, of course without putting any plugins in the signal...

Re: Tracking bands without a console is a PITA!
Are you using PCIe cards with your Rednet, I assume? With my Mac that’s not currently option. Although there is an RME Dante that is USB apparently. Nope, just ethernet. I do have a switch, a Netgear ProSAFE G5116E which is a 1GB switch. Everything goes through that seamlessly. It was one of Audina...

Re: 1073's... Real deal or one of the many clones?
If you are going for the sound of records made when the 1073 etc. were NEW, then get NEW 1073s.
If you are going to wax nostalgic about "vintage" stuff, then get a vintage one.

Re: Tracking bands without a console is a PITA!
So I probably just need a better interface. I recommend anything with DANTE protocol. Not exactly cheap, but really great, and you can connect it to nearly anything as long as it has an ethernet port. I absolutely love my Focusrite RedNet 2s (I just bought a second one). 32 channels of input and ou...

Re: How Do I Test A D.I. Box?
Does it pass any signal normally?
If it does not, can you send a 1kHz sine wave through it, via your DAW?
A multimeter will not tell you much if you don't open the DI box up, and start tracing the signal path.

Re: Tracking bands without a console is a PITA!
If you are willing to risk it, you can build a decent Digidesign Pro Tools TDM Accel system for about a grand to 2 grand, depending on how much hardware you want to get. You can get them for a song these days. If they are in good shape, you can keep them running for years more. The Digidesign 192s w...

Re: Tracking bands without a console is a PITA!
I still have my console LOL. That said, I use Focusrite RedNet 2 interfaces, which have a roundtrip latency to / from my laptop of only 4 mS. Good enough for most musicians. If that is too much latency, I still have my Digidesign Pro Tools HD10 with those 192 interfaces, which gets me sub 1mS laten...

Re: Saturation Tools and Tricks
For some mono sources, I still like to use guitar pedals like a Boss Blues Driver. As to plug ins for saturation, well, TOMB saying "it all depends." I've been using the Plugin Alliance's Neve channel strip as a "front end" of sorts for Nuendo. Where you can have plugins affect the incoming signal o...

Re: The bottom of the snare
Styles of music I mic the bottom snare on:
Jazz. Ambient. Slow Blues. Anything where the sizzle of the snare wires is actually going to be a part of the drum sound.

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....
new pair of Avantone CLA-10A limited edition speakers. Active, Brown Veneer. Funky. those do look cool - I'd be interested how they work out for you... Been listening to these for over a week now, they really are good. Less low end, and more midrange, just like the originals. Which is fantastic, si...

Re: VocAlign? or is there something that does this better?
Yeah, we all don't get the type of clients Nick gets. Fuck, I hate tracking vocals most times. Aw shucks... ;) Even the pros take time to get it right. At least with them, they know the target, study their harmonies, etc. It always helps to write out the harmonies in music notation. And a cool tric...

Re: widening stereo sources in a mix
Look at the "Stereo" waveform. Is it truly Stereo? Many, and I mean MANY amateur recorders, even pro musicians, record stuff in "Stereo" but with only one mic. There are also DAWs that you set if they record in Stereo or Mono, and the artiste may not know that is happening. Whatever the case, when I...
