'The Big Misconception'

I'm a big Tape Op fan. I'm wondering why 'The Big Misconception' omits any reference to electronic music? As an 'analogue studio in a box', the inadequacies of a computer are well documented. What about that vast area of music which uses the computer to create? And, dare I say it, which has forged a...

I disagree. As already mentioned, most of the examples cited are really good recordings with occasional quirks, some not at all related to "fidelity". The point I mean to make is that many recordings from these periods defined 'good'. The sounds became a yardstick because of the fondness felt for t...

If 'fidelity' means how accurately we capture the sounds, then I agree with the OP. I think we enjoy making things sound great, but that usually means changing the sound in some way. Becoming part of the sound. I don't care about sound quality as it might be measured. I care about it through my ears...

I assume that the Mackie interface is Core Audio compatible and doesn't need drivers?

If you go to Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup, is it listed as one of the Input/Output options?

If not, you could try downloading the Driver from the appropriate page on the Mackie site.

lavalier mic advice

Hi We need an omni lavalier mic for use with a DV camera. Decent, rather than high-end. In needs, through some kind of attachment/pack, to give an XLR output. I can power it from the camera. I can see plenty of modular wireless systems, but we don't need this kind of thing. Wires are fine. Any thoug...

This made me think of the recent Scott Solter interview - 'prescriptions' for focussing ideas and limiting options. I'm flying out to the States to record with Scott next month, largely spurred on by this approach and thanks to the article in TO.

All good advice. The thing is, certainly in my experience, traditional metal guitar recordings aren't really supposed to be all that separated. They're usually the same rhythm part doubled, so they simply thicken/reenforce each other. One homogenous sound is often the goal. I commend any metal band ...

I disagree. I think the mindset is very strongly influenced by the environment and the tools. I do agree that some people set-out to make decisions and others, if they're honest, don't actually intend to make any decisions - they just want to experiment with technology as a hobby. Home recording see...

Most people recording in their home studios don't have the time, personnel or gear to 'get it right at source'. They have one mic, an unfinished idea and an hour of recording time after work before the neighbors start complaining. They're recording themselves and just want to get a verse down before...

My honest reply would be to point out how few people will actually download and unzip files to listen to them. If there is a streaming link to tracks, I'm always up for a listen, but anything more tends to put me off. But maybe I'm just lazy?!

Reverb gets a bad name due to decades of badly used 'cathedral' patches. But these newer convolution plug-ins are great for emulating room sound and a sense of 'space' around instruments. Use a 'small space' setting with a very short decay - more ambience than reverb, but meaty enough to have some c...

You need to download the developers kit. Disabling the nap is in amongst some of the features it allows. Do a search and it'll be there.

I remember this problem bugging the G5s. Didn't realise it had an impact on other machines too. Disabling nap definitely cured the whine I had with my G5.

Just to offer a bit of balance, the first single was indeed pretty poor (and what a terrible video), but... First of all, there was a statement issued about mastering issues with the download versions of the first couple of tracks. I've heard 6 tracks on the Mission:Metallica site and, although they...
