I would love to see a Stars of the Lid interview in Tape Op. Anyone else second this? I have never seen an interview with them discussing their method to recording, gear used, etc.

ive been experimenting with bows and you have to really slap on a lot of that rosin shit on to get it to "grab" well. dont be afraid to apply a ton of it. also if you are using it on guitar it is a good idea to use covers on your pickups so the rosin doesnt get stuck in them.

What works for me is tuning the front and rear heads pretty low, almost to the point where they are about the same, and then i take the beater head and slight tune it higher than the front head. This give the bass drum really good "punch" without any weird overtones.

I picked up a pro vla some months ago and i love it for bass and vocals. It has good tone. Some plugs can get close but when you want to get some serious comp/limiting going on you need to bump that shit thru some analog boxes. Plus you get knobs to play with and vu meters.
