There are typically very slight differences between the internal latency of any two different converters. It doesn't matter if they're connected via ADAT or SPDIF or AES or Firewire.... You should make an XLR patchbay for your mic signals and preamp inputs. Then, use a TRS patchbay for your inserts and compressors. checkout the Antelope Orion 32. 32 channels through USB 2.0. It really works.
