I'm with the other guys saying skip out on the 8-core. You could get a lesser Mac Pro, that will still be very useful for a long time and with the extra money, uhhh, buy a car. With an SM7 and a pair of small diaphragm condensors you can record pretty much anything, the pres in the Firepod are defin...

Right now, if you want latency free direct monitoring, without relying on a secondary application, there are only 2 games in town. PTHD and DP with a MOTU system. In PC land, there is also ASIO Direct monitoring (I understand that the OP is NOT in PC land). I use this with Cubase SX3 and a MOTU 896...

The FireStudio does work with Windows, I think right now it's between the MOTU 828mk3 (or Traveller), the FireStudio and whether or not I can find a good deal on a FireFace 800... From everything I hear, is it safe to say that the MOTU units would be the "worst" (certainly not bad) sounding of the b...

Presonus FireStudio 2626 - Looks GREAT in terms of features, price, preamps are apparently very usable. Got a great review in tapeop. driver issues, though! I have a FireStudio. I use it on two different Macs (G5 and G4). It works well, sounds good, and sounds like it would fit your bill. The conve...

I've been looking at macbook pros, but have been wary since the agere chipset issues popped up. i'm on the lookout though. Is the Agere chipset a firewire thing? Isn't this a non-issue if you use an expresscard slot, which provides it's own FW chipset? Jeff thats true, if i decide to go that route ...

The Metric Halo units are Mac only? ARGH! There's a 2882 on ebay right now and it's only about 5 miles away from me, but if I get it I'd have to get the macbook later, and I can't use it with my pc. sigh. Having just looked at the ebay auction, you must be near NYC. I'm in Cherry Hill, NJ. You're w...

@TapeOpAndy: Yeah I mean having the preamps now would be great, but I'm in no huge rush so I wouldn't really mind continuing to use a couple of channels now and then adding on when I can. The expresscard option is definitely a consideration, especially if it becomes difficult for me to find a laptop...

Which >$1000 Firewire Interface? So many choices!
First post, whats up? Right now Ive got a Mackie Satellite 2 input interface and it works great, its just a bit limiting. I want to start recording drums but there are just so many options for a firewire interface right now, im not really sure which way to go. I would like at least 4 preamps, but it...
