Re: Lost in the wilds of lo/mid-fi -- your thoughts please.

On my last mix I was struggling with a dull-sounding lead vocal--I did a lot of EQ cuts on that track but I felt like I struggling to find a good balance between murkiness and harshness. Dig out the Oktava & give it a whirl on lead vocal. It's likely to give you more brightness than most of the oth...

Re: Lost in the wilds of lo/mid-fi -- your thoughts please.

One thing that took me way too long to learn was to high-pass filter pretty much everything. And get rid of excess low end on every track but the ones you want to carry that frequency range (e.g. the kick and bass). There's usually extraneous mud and rumble on everything, so cutting the low frequen...

I’ve seen extra drives on reverb for the hd24 fairly reasonable.
I think I still have a bunch of IDE drives that I bought for my (now sold) HD24XR but never even got around to formatting. If you're interested, I could send you a few for the price of shipping.

Somewhere I have a jpg photo of a couple of pages of the CE1700 manual, but that's all I've ever found. Let me know if you come up with something.

Re: microphone death

With dynamics, I've had a few that have turned into "telephone mics"--very limited frequency response, generally crappy sounding. Almost all of them were made before the Beta 52 was first produced. Other than a production fault, I can't understand why a well cared for dynamic would crap out that qui...

A Speck SSM is about the size of a mACKIE 1604 and is very flexible. But that might be bigger than you'd want.

Re: Overdrive pedals educate me

A few days ago I picked up an Amptweaker Tight Boost locally for $25. They seem to be pretty expensive new, but the last used sale I could find on ebay was $69. Lots of clean boost, and cranking the Mid & High knobs seems to add some distortion within the pedal itself. Pretty versatile pedal.

This one's taken a while & I'm not sure I'm done with it yet. Like surfing through molasses.

You could try B&H Photo too. As I type this they still have them at the good price.

Thanks for the input. I'll definitely check in mono. It won't be on vinyl, so no worries there.

Polarity Flip as Net Positive?

So I was recording vox with 2 mics--one going through a preamp to the DAW, the other into a spring reverb. Once recorded, I noticed that panning the reverbed track out of the center caused a radical change in the vocal sound. Closer inspection revealed that the reverb device had flipped the polarity...

Re: Andy Martin, Knopfler, Buckingham..who are some awesome fingerstyle players?

I'm fond of Sadie Dupuis's playing in Speedy Ortiz.

Interesting video--I've been goofing around with more pickless playing lately, so it's neat to see his technique.

I think I had some old McCurdy console modules with those dayglo green switches once upon a time--I'm sure they've been used elsewhere as well.
