Re: Unusual fix for microphone noise issue

I recently used a piece of one of those rectangular pencil erasers to fix the Play button on a teacher friend's portable CD player (a classroom model with built in speaker). Sort of audio related, & I was right proud of myself for making it work.

Re: Welcome Guests and Lurkers

Interestingly, TOMB is the one site where I get ads even with adblockers on. I actually appreciate that--ads are very much audio-focused, & I don't have to worry about being tracked or having ads tailored to something that has nothing to do with anything I care about.

Re: MD 409 in pieces

It's possible there's a small transformer before the XLR. It might be worth trying to get the base apart to check(carefully, of course.) Or if you have an ohm meter, check for resistance between the leads that go down to the XLR. If you see resistance (usually something under 1K, sometimes way under...

Re: Oddball Compressor ... Executone M270

transilytic is actually what I meant--much more prone to failure (in my experience) than standard electrolytics.

Re: Oddball Compressor ... Executone M270

The bigger caps look like transilytics (I think that's the name.) If they are, expect them to fail--if they haven't already. I had to replace a bunch in some old Wurlitzers once--they don't seem to age well.

Tascam 388 in Atlanta. No ship, needs work.

I don't know if anybody up here might be interested, but I've got a Tascam 388 that doesn't play/record or rewind. Could be a belt, could need adjusting, could be a motor. Also, the right main channel does not get signal from any of the input channels. VU meters all work, one VU lamp is out. Decent ...

Re: Reducing noise from a vintage synth?

The poly six has a chorus, right? Is the noise worse with chorus on than off? Sometimes the bbd chips get noisy with age. Replacing with an NOS chip from a reputable dealer (bootlegs abound) can solve that problem. Other than that, I’m clueless.

Re: Adding Center Detent Pan Pots to a TEAC Model 1 Line Mixer?

It's worth keeping in mind that pots are commonly rated at =/- 20%, +/-10% if you spend more. So, since you're matching two decks on a pan pot, you have the potential (though it's not likely) for a dual 10K to have one deck 12K and the other 8K. And there's also the possibility that (even if the pot...

On the roll-your-own fx front: look up Ben Burtt on the youtubes. There's a fair number of interviews with/features about him, & his techniques are inspiring.

Re: sound effect libraries - good forums for second hand?

My limited, nonprofessional experience: It's not that hard to make a fair amt. of what you want through recording & sound manipulation plus a couple of synths. (The Hanna-Barbera library features quite a few fairly simple analog synth sounds.) It's worth looking in the sound effects/novelty section ...

Re: Cheap but good headphone amp recommendations

My experience with the Behringer was only with an older unit, and the closer a channel was to the internal power supply, the more mains hum was audible in that channel. Behringer has probably addressed this issue by now. Other than that, it was fine. Oz Audio Q-Mix HM6 can be had pretty cheaply 2nd ...

I saw Jaap Blonk perform many years ago--he was impressive! I can unequivocally say that he's the best Dada tone poet I've ever seen perform.

Re: Old Colony Mastering build recap

My advice (which you probably don't need) is to keep gutters clean and make sure they carry the water far away from the building. I've had to cope with a lot of water problems in various homes, so I feel your pain. My general experience is that good gutters go a long way toward alleviating misery. A...
