Re: How Do I Test A D.I. Box?
So a passive DI is (or should be) stupidly simple. Here's how I would test initially: Set your pad switch to its 0 position. Check DC Resistance between pins 2 & 3 of the XLR connector. If everything's hooked up right with the transformer, I'd expect to see 20 to maybe 60 ohms there, depending on th...

Re: monitors
Fluid Audio FX80. I bought them after reading Mike Kosacek's review in the mag, and because I really wanted coaxial monitors. (stimulus money undoubtedly influenced my decision as well.) They work well for me--they've got a little bit of the low level hiss that is apparently common with Class D amps...

Re: Mic pre in pedal form?
Get a passive lo-z to hi-z connector. If that's not enough gain, run it into a clean preamp pedal and then on from there. No need for a real mic pre, IMO. I will say that Scodiddly's Hamptone-based project from a couple years back could probably be set up to work on 9V--with 24V and a step-up transf...

Re: 2 Noisy Studer 169s - Fix it myself or hire someone to fix?
Is it a constant noise? White noise or 60 Hz hum? Sporadic pops? Does it change as you move pots/faders?
Probably the first/easiest thing to do is to clean pots, switches, & connectors. Even just exercising pots and switches can make a big difference, if that's where things are noisy.

Focusrite 18i20. The 18i8 was cool but didn't have enough outs for what I'd like to do with my setup, & a good deal came up locally.

Re: Video Overdubbing Software
Maybe look at the free version of DaVinci Resolve? It looks like the "Fairlight" section allows real-time audio recording for video. I'm not totally sure I understood what you're looking for, but it might do the trick, and it's free. It will tax an older system though.

Re: Mojo Nixon and Damo Suzuki
I hadn't seen about Damo Suzuki. He was scheduled to play here just before the pandemic. I think there may have been delays due to visa issues, and then covid fucked everything up. I believe this entire broadcast is somewhere on the youtubes, but what a freaking band: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v...

Re: What preamps are y'all liking these days?
Totally off topic, but is there any chance you could point me to documentation for the McCurdy AT241 line amp? I have a couple sitting in the basement, and your mention of McCurdy made me want to do something with them.

Re: Transducer use?
I inherited from a friend a while ago. I'm assuming it's a transducer but the xlr connector is female so he must have used it as some kind of a speaker? Possibly. Transducers can generally be used to transmit or receive. Typically a spring reverb will a transducer at both the sending and receiving ...

Re: What preamps are y'all liking these days?
My sort of dark horse get-out-of-the-way preamp is the Event EMP-1. They're a bit hard to find these days but are typically under $100. They used security screws on them, so I finally bought a set of security bits to peek inside (plus one of mine had a busted IEC power plug that needed replacing). I...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....
Something from the Sweetwater Gear Exchange. When I noticed that the neck pickup is a Seymour Duncan Custom Shop Staple P90 (which lists for more than the guitar cost), I decided to go for it. The pickup is pretty cool, as is the Gibson P90 in the bridge. The guitar itself I'm not yet crazy about--h...
