Bummer. Have you ever seen it move tape before? Did your friend who sold it to you have it rolling? Maybe the motors are a little weak/lazy. I find that sometimes you can get 'em started by hand and they sort of snap into action. I have a similar Teac that is basically in the same situation. I wonde...

first: make sure you have it threaded right. if you don't have the tape engaging the little lifter guy it won't get moving. (It's not a lifter... what's that thing called? you know, the swinging arm guys at far left and far right. there's lots of tape-threading videos on youtube... make sure you hav...

Most pressing plants will do small runs (300 or so) -- Printing jackets is another matter (higher minimums), so you might have have to get creative with the packaging. Buy blank jackets from Dorado or someplace and sticker them or something. $3000 is plenty! check out: www.eksmfg.com . Long live vin...

The new tape is either RMG or ATR. People have reported mixed things about the RMG tape. I bought some and it was OK for me. I'm no expert.
3.
Not a stupid idea... This is the TapeOp forum, after all. Try it and tell us how it sounds.
Good luck and have fun

And the consensus was that we liked sitting around as a family listening to it, better than when we jack the iPod into the stereo. I feel the exact same way. Listening to records is more fun, period. Also, as you noticed, I think comparing 10 or 30 second snippets of vinyl vs. digital isn't very he...

I had a hard time figuring out what city/town/state you're located in. I still don't know. This is pretty common on the worldwide web. I recommend using upper and lowercase letters for any kind of text -- That is, anything of length. All-caps is fine for lists or captions, titles, whatever, but sent...

VCR is an interesting option for yet another tone too but how do you monitor the volume on most of them? I never had one with an input meter... The fancier VCRs will have input level knobs and meters, the cheaper ones have auto-limiting, so maybe there's your "tape compression." Ha. I wouldn't sugg...

I had a brief and tiny introduction to him once -- It was at Sear Sound and he was elbow deep in some project -- in a narrow workshop, surrounded by heaps of electronics. That is a cool memory. I've read all the essays on the Sear Sound site; Please post more links if you have them. Writings, bio, w...

I dug this when I listened to it last week... I began a reply but then work interfered... Any more info on the tape deck(s)? Did you ping-pong, bounce or overdub on tape or just do one basic track and then go to computer? Were you using a mixer before the tape deck? My first reel-to-reel was a Voice...

It sounds like maybe the pads are loose. Check the little foam pads that hold the tape flat against the heads. The glue that holds them on often dries out over the years and then the tape doesn't make good contact and it sounds like it's underwater. You can unscrew or crack open the old shells and C...
