$700 computer suggestions for tracking w/MOTU 828mkII ?

I've got about $700 to spend on a computer for recording, what should I get? I already have a MOTU 828mkII interface, but nothing seems to have a FireWire port anymore. I've heard mixed stories about whether I can adapt this interface to Thunderbolt and make it work with a Mac Mini. Any input/sugges...

So I should probably just look at getting the best desktop (not laptop?) for the money and adding a firewire card to it?

EDIT:

Is there a laptop solution also?

What PC for recording?

I'm about to purchase a PC for recording, but I'm not knowledgable about computer hardware and I need some advice. I have a MOTU 828mkII, so I know I'm going to need a firewire port. I've heard that it needs to be a Texas Instruments 1394 chipset for the firewire? Don't know what that means, but I r...

Light socket to power outlet adapter... sketchy?

My band just lost our practice space, and one of the guys got a storage unit. The problem is, there's no power adapter - just a light fixture. They're talking about using an adapter to get power from the light socket. A google search returned a bunch of pictures of what appears to be the screw-on pa...

New demo featuring prepared guitar

New track! I'm not really looking for an engineering critique here. This is just a demo from a rehearsal, but it came out pretty well and I wanted to share it. http://www.reverbnation.com/play_now/song_12598302 The drummer already had his kit mic'd, he threw a 57 in the floor in front of my amp, and...

Dumb Newb Question: MOTU 828 mkii as standalone mixer

Hey, I'm sure this is a stupid question with a simple answer and I can't imagine an explanation not being in the manual. But I can't find it, so here I am... I got a MOTU 828 mkii a while back when I was trying to put together a home studio, which has still yet to happen. At the moment I'm needing s...

...When you say this, I think of Apple basically profiting off pirate mp3s by selling hardware to listen to them (I-pod). Is that what you're talking about, though? I'm talking about what the personal computer industry called "convergence" which was to create a market for ever newer, more powerful ...

I have nothing helpful to add, but I just want to point out that I'm intrigued to know exactly what this is all about. I feel like half the story is missing. Do these people know they're being recorded/amplified by this robomic? Is the dialogue scripted? Is it an art piece(like someone already aske...

That's incredible, but out of budget. Thanks for sharing though!

This would appear to be an art installation rather than a practical audio application. Yes/no? Are you worried about the microphone being stolen? If the receiver will be close then you can get away with a rather cheap system. Oh, yeah. I don't know if I stated that explicitly, but this is an art in...

I think the black-and-white discussion of piracy being responsible for musicians not making money is grossly oversimplified. The entire industry has changed because of technology and other factors. It's not just the way people acquire music and how much (if anything) they're willing to pay for it. I...

Problems with multi-channel Ultrabeat in Logic 9.0

I'm attempting to use the multi-channel feature of Ultrabeat in Logic 9.0. I've never done this before. I created 3 multi-timbral channels (Kick/Snare/Hat). Set the instrument to Ultrabeat and load up a drum kit. Set the kick output to "Main," the snare to "3-4," and the hat output to "5-6." Opened ...

This is what 20' boom poles and shotgun mics are specifically made for. the other option is to rig up a parabolic mic, like the type you see on the sidelines of football games, on a hinge on the ceiling or something, and then just tilt it through the angle you need. Boom poles are pretty much the e...
