Re: transparent 500 series pre

I don't know about transparent, all of them sound subtly different to me with a few extremes, but I enjoy recording a lot of things through an API channel. I have other choices, but I could probably be satisfied recording everything through API's, they're versatile. Especially when you can run vocal...

Just bought a Purple MC77. I feel like doing cartwheels. I've wanted one for so damn long.
Been on my list for a really long time too. You'll have to share your thoughts once you put it to work.

Re: U195 and too many midrange mics

I probably have between 5 and 9 different dynamic mics up (all under $400) any time I track a whole band depending on how many guitar amps they're using and whether I was using a ribbon or condenser on said guitar amps.

Re: Is my situation condusive to a Monitor puchase?

Anything you make out of 703 is easily taken down to put up elsewhere later. You can build it with frames covered with fabric and hang them like big ass paintings, or if you wanna be light weight you can just wrap them with burlap, hot glue the backs, and put some bolts through to hold it together, ...

Re: U195 and too many midrange mics

Wise words here. Also I wouldn't weigh your needs, or surpluses based on midrange, cheap, or pricey. On any given day I imagine people with some of the best mic lockers (and use them often) would see their setup ranging in combination of cheap workhorses, in betweeners, and pricey bling mics.

Re: Is my situation condusive to a Monitor puchase?

Keep your headphones, add the monitors. Listen on both. Wait, save a few hundred bucks and then buy some OC 703, some fabric and some hardware and try and tame your room a little more.

Step by step....

Re: Mixing a band with a single, mono electric guitar

By the way, here's what i learnt to align mics on amps: have the guitar player plug/unplug. Buzz, crackle, bang. Zoom in on the waveform, move one of the mics, record again, closer, repeat, now they combine nicely. I know many of you know that already but it doesn't hurt for the two people stumblin...

Re: Mixing a band with a single, mono electric guitar

i've done the different amps/mics panned hard but it never really gets me there. i hope to someday crack this nut. i like a short delay on one side for tracking, but sounds too phasey to my ear to actually use in a mix. I've done a lot of exploration with this technique. To me it really comes acros...

Re: Mixing a band with a single, mono electric guitar

i just released these in trio format: https://vlayman.bandcamp.com/track/demorepub https://vlayman.bandcamp.com/track/30-covers-my-arse-instrumental I like the sense of space on these. Not sure if it's real or synthesized but you've got that thing happening where you feel like you're hearing an act...

Richard Thompson,
The dude in the trio I'm recording is the only guy in town who's ever brought Thompson to mind in his playing. I need to listen to I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight again.

Mixing a band with a single, mono electric guitar

Hey gang! Over the years I've gotten all too good at creating a wall of stereo distorted guitars. Doubling stuff with single guitarists, big sounds with two, doing two amps (and sometimes delaying one of them). What I haven't done much of is the root of rock and roll: Just one guitar. I've tried to ...

Re: Tracks imported from Mackie DL32R are hissing. They weren't before.

Also, are the files you imported at a different resolution or filetype than you normally work in? There are many variables I won't pretend to predict in your system, but sometimes different DAWs get set up through preferences, interface settings etc to work on a certain file type and need troublesho...

Re: Printing An Effect To Its Own Tape Track

Good advice here. I always like a separate reverb track for anything, vocals, drums, acoustic instruments etc. The main reason is I find in the mix process the thing that often gets adjusted the most times and right up to the final mix is the reverb. It's nice to be able to change your mind a couple...
