Re: The bottom of the snare
A little late to the game This is my hit making Ludwig Acrolite fully dressed for battle. Bottom mic phased reversed Good idea with that clamp for the bottom mic. Floor real estate is valuable once the stands start piling up! That dead-on, perpendicular mic placement on bottom snare is interesting....

Re: Hotel Earth studio 1 build diary
^ Just some words of assurance while you're in the thick of it. When I built out my place I also did a straight forward, two leaf, room within a room design with bog standard solid core doors. I don't even think I have a ten inch gap between them, and the isolation is just fine. There are a lot of j...

Re: The bottom of the snare
It's usually about 5% of the mixed snare sound for me. The top head+ overheads is the foundation, the bottom mic is seasoning. It always sounds weird by itself.

Re: Best mics/mic-ing approaches for sax?
I've been an alto player since I was 10. I love recording saxophone because it's one of the easiest instruments to get sounding right. M160 is okay, sm57 gets away with more in that spot than it does most anywhere else, but nothing's ever beat out the SM7b for me. Point it just above the bell a foot...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....
I just ordered a Sequential Take Five polyphonic synth.
I've been hankering for one for ages. I've become something of a gear camel in middle age: 1-2 new pieces a year at most, so when I actually buy it's really exciting. Can't wait to explore the voices and textures.

Re: write this song
It could be a good topical folk song with irony, unreliable narrator. The verses are just rhyming details of legal woes and the chorus just refrains "I'm an innocent man."

Re: is there delay plugin like a delta lab effectron?
Everyone covered the factual stuff I was going to say. So I'll simply add that I love that box. When I was working with a songwriter on his mostly straight forward Americana album he kept wanting to push some parts into weirder sonic territory. Everything I came up with that he loved had the effectr...

Live Room Measurements
Hey gang. I'm gearing up for the next round of improvement cycle at my place. Last summer's journey of control room measurement/treatment was difficult but fruitful. Has me thinking about my live room. I know the goals aren't exactly the same but I assume you can find and should treat major anomalie...

Re: Underwhelmed by ATMOS music (So far)
I can't say that I've given it a proper test drive like you, but starting with surround I've been skeptical at multispeaker innovations in music. Mostly because it's not analogous to live music. I don't want the drums in front of me and the guitar solo to come in behind me. I think the sales guy's f...

Re: Bass and octaves and low end
Apologies, this is a potentially annoying non-answer..... But what if the answer is leaving a hole? Last year I got into an album by The Casual Dots (ex Bikini Kill), a trio with two guitars and no bass. It's a cool sounding record and the hole in the lows is part of the sound. Kind of like the earl...
