furman pq3 / pq6 (stereo pq3). Noisy EQ, but also does nice double duty as an instrument preamp. Have recorded a lot of DI bass tracks I'm happy with using the pq3 as the front end.

Thought: with a little tweaking to the mount, you could position the ribbon between the magnets instead of having the ribbon above them; this would increase output gain substantially. One would think... but I've tried that, and it's not the case. funky...not at all what I'd have expected! Question:...

got the copper tape & installed it today. Working much better now, thanks! I took the copper tape, folded it in half against the clamping edge, and soldered it to the handle of the clip, moving the primary leads of the xfmr to the handle with the tape soldered to it. Thought: with a little tweaking ...

I picked up a half dozen of the $5 first run K-micros. Fine for talkback and ultra crushed special effects on drums, kinda useless for much of anything else. Haven't tried the newer ones.

take it apart and put it back together, with an emphasis on getting everything on tightly. Might need to buy the weird headed screwdriver to do so, but fliptops.net sell it for $7.
