After months of back and fourth between the TDM and LE - i've decided to just upgrade to a 003 and G5, maybe ProTools 8. I've heard from a few pretty reliable studio geek friends that the disparity I'm hearing is just that the older TDM cards are processing at 16 bit and the LE is functioning at 32 ...

Nope, LE still sounds considerably fuller. Maybe it's the higher track count bottlenecking...or the 32 bit theory. Whatever, I'm about done with TDM...
