I would suggest starting with the LDC as a drum overhead or drummer perspective mic, sm57 on the snare, and sm7 on the kick. beta 58 and either the AKG or Rode on the guitar amp. Since the vocalist is just making scratch tracks I would use the 58 on his voice and let it pick up some of the guitar. I...

large band, small room
I am going to record an improvised rock band in a couple of weeks. We are using a live room that is roughly 15x20 feet with good gear (u87, md421's, ksm's etc). The band wants to play live with a couple of guitars (amps in the iso room), bass/keyboards (DI), some vocals and some brass. At some point...

Does anyone recognize the mics on the drums? I can make out what looks like a ribbon on the snare and a dynamic on the floor tom.

Re: Mixing Toms (Louder!)
Hmm. Hire a drummer that knows how to play with dynamics.

Thanks for the articles. I should have known Gabe was using "shitty" micing techniques. I'm a huge fan of using two or three mics on the kit and let musicianship give the record it's sound. My home recordings usually wind up with an MD 421 about a foot in front and pointed at the upper right corner ...

Dap Kings Drums
Does anyone know what they use on the drums in Naturally? Other then having an amazing drummer and a great room, what reverb and comp do they use?

iLok - $30
The iLok is clean and doesn't have any licenses downloaded. Purchased about a week ago but I don't have the receipt and so I have to sell it.
I will mail it anywhere within the continental US

Close dynamics, please! I typically use an md 421 on my Supro 1x15 tube combo. Recently I've been using a Sunn solid state head and an Ampeg 2x10 cab. I usually place the mic 3 inches from the grill and point it at the edge of the cone. I also leave the volume down. The other day I did a session wit...
