I bought my 81's to use as drum overheads, although my last few projects I've done a mono LDC. Never the less, I know I can't do mono for everything and I'll go back to the 81's when I need a stereo spread. I like them on percussive things... if I'm doing hand percussion overdubs I just leave one up...

chuckfurok - thanks. I didn't know about this preference and I'm going to check it out today when I'm near my interface. This might be the solution I was looking for!

headphone mix vs. playback mix on Digi 002

Scenario: I'm recording a drummer, bass player, and vocalist/guitar player in my studio. Singer in booth, drummer and bass in the room with me. Everyone in headphones. As we record, I'm likely putting lots of vocals in the headphones, and very little drums since they're pretty loud in the room. It t...

I feel like I understand why people beat up on ART. But four years after I bought it, I still really like my PRO MPA pre. It does something different than my API A2D, and from the stock pre's on my Digi 002 and Digimax. Last Friday I recorded two singers over a pre-recorded track for a children's bo...

My A2D does not pass signal into Pro Tools unless I go to the "Hardware" menu, and then change the clock source from "Internal" to "SPDIF/RCA".

I do believe this has changed on a newer version of the unit, for people that want to use the unit but need to clock to something else in their set-up.

I had a client insist that I do exactly this once. I did. It was louder. He liked it more. Oh well.

I also refused to shell out $500 for particle board studio furniture. For years I made do with a Staples desk, but when I moved into a new space decided I wanted something purpose built. I decided a desk was a purchase I wanted to make, and then resolved that I would wait until one showed up on Crai...

I also love my A2D! Out of the box I did notice that the pre-amps had better "reach" and detail than my Digi 002 and ART PRO MPA pre's, but it took me a while to get used to it. I started to think it was a good purchase the first time I used it on kick & snare, and it just seemed immediately faster ...

+1 for the API A2D

It's convenient and portable, and because it's SPDIF it's two extra channels I can get into either my 002 or MBox 2 Pro that I wouldn't have been able to get otherwise.

Let us know what you think of it after using it for a bit!

I wanted to let everyone know that I bit the bullet and installed a 15,000 BTU Mitsubishi Mr. Slim unit in my studio. Folks here gave a lot of good advice that helped me with my decision. So far it's great! I had a basics session last Wednesday and put it on for an hour or so before the band arrived...

One monitor picking up hard drive noise

I have a pair of Roland DS90A monitors, which I'm not in love with, but they are getting the job done for now. But one of them makes very quiet noise, like a hard drive scanning for data, and audible clicks. I don't hear it if there's any signal going to the speaker, but now that I am finally out of...

I have also found myself ignoring the little "danger" logos and opening up some gear to fix little things lately. I replaced the power harness in my Digi 002, re-attached a wayward VU meter in my ART MPA, and opened up a compressor to look under the hood. Could I have zapped myself doing this stuff?...

I agree it's one of the toughest parts of mixing! It took me a while to appreciate that.

I've come to really value the input of other people, even (perhaps especially) non-musicians. "Check this mix out! Does anything sound too loud or too soft to you?"

I'm not as opposed to Autotune as some... I feel like it saves me a lot of time on background vocals, where they might be far enough back in the mix that you can get away with one or two artifacts. In a two part background vocal sometimes I'll allow myself to tune one part at a time, but never both ...

"Rock School" is a documentary about an after-school music program in Philadelphia, and it's what the "School of Rock" movie with Jack Black was loosely based on.

It is really great!
