Re: Fostex 280 firing on 3 cylinders
I run a business repairing cassette-based multitrack recorders, and I've worked on a good number of Fostex 280's. My guess would be either a bad fader (as the other commenter suggested) or a failed op amp near the fader. It's a shame that schematic isn't more detailed! (I just checked the service ma...

Re: Tascam reintroducing high bias cassettes
..and soon David, Jack and Mike will chime in. et tu brute? :) Ha! I actually wasn't going to comment because so much of this thread is pure opinion, but since I've been called out, I suppose I'll share mine as well... 90 minute tapes, to my mind, are fine to use in a cassette 4-track recorder. My ...

Re: Tascam reintroducing high bias cassettes
These are certainly cool, but there's a very limited amount of oxide available, so I'd be surprised if they went into larger-scale production of these cassettes. With that said, I'd be glad to be mistaken!

Re: SCSI (was:SCUZZY)
Searching for "external SCSI CD" on eBay today (12/13/21) brings up a number of options under $100, and a few under $80.

Re: Tascam 424 mk1 Power Supply
I reached out to the ECH guy but never heard back. Glad to see you made some progress with the repair! I sent a message to introduce myself after reading about ECH in this thread - Carl sent me a reply the same day. I'd suggest trying again. Speaking as someone who runs a repair business, sometimes...

Re: SCUZZY
It's an Akai S3000XL. I haven't found a way to change the title of the thread. Immediately after posting it I had a similar thought to yours. Thanks for responding. EDIT: I originally posted a reply after finding some info about the Akai S3200XL, which is a different model. Just realized my mistake...

Re: SCUZZY
I'm using Pike Pinder's Mellotron CD-ROM. In order to use with the sampler I have I need/use a SCSI external drive. As insurance, I'm looking for one as a backup. Does anyone have one they can spare? Or give me direction to someone who might? What is the brand/model of the sampler you're using? I m...

Re: tech for tascam and fostex machines
I can't directly vouch for any of these, but they are all based in or near NYC: https://ifixny.com/electronics-repair-nyc.html (Manhattan) http://www.funktionaltech.com/other-services (Brooklyn) http://www.analogique.com/serv.htm (Manhattan) http://www.njfactoryservice.com/services.html (Mays Landin...

Re: tech for tascam and fostex machines
a friend of mine needs to get a couple machines serviced and I'm out of the loop these days close to NYC is preferable anyone know anyone? You mention Tascam and Fostex, but not whether they are cassette-based or reel-to-reel machines. I work on cassette 4-track/8-track machines and can possibly ma...

Re: Tascam 424 mk1 Power Supply
Not to steal jobs away from Jack but if you're in Toronto there's a local repair tech who specializes in multitrack cassette. The folks at Paul's Boutique can put you in touch. Thanks for the heads-up about this, Dave! You're likely talking about Electronics Compassionate House, who I hadn't heard ...

Re: Tascam 424 mk1 Power Supply
I just noticed the picture on the Amazon page shows a center positive connector, which is incorrect. The one they sent is center negative, and works with my Omnichord. All 4-track cassette machines made by Tascam that have a 2.5mm barrel connector use center-negative power adapters. You're correct ...

Re: Using tab to transient on analog tape bounces
It's the latter. I've been recording the record this way off and on for the last year and a half and it's gone really well except for a few things. This can be done much more painlessly if you stripe time code to one of the tracks on your tape machine and then set up your DAW to follow it while you...

Re: Tascam 388 Maintenance, Repair and FAQ thread
I still refer to this thread all the time but lots of the links are dead these days. A real shame. For a lot of those broken links, you can copy the URL and paste it into the Waybackmachine (https://web.archive.org/) to see an archived copy. Just tried it with a few of the HomeRecording.com threads...

Re: The Tascam 388
For reasons too embarrassing to be discussed anywhere I need a new pot for the Aux Master control. The model I need (an Alps Alpine PCB mounted 10K ohm A taper, 15mm D shaft) is no longer in production (though a 20mm version might be available, but I'd really rather have the right size if I can) so...
