Just an update: I just got the album back from mastering (thanks to Mr. Carl Saff), and you can check out two tracks (including the one in question on this thread) on the Dead Painters bandcamp.

I've had a lot going on in my life since I posted these up here so I haven't had a lot of time to update. I made a few more tweaks to the mix and am feeling pretty good about it for now. Check it out: Nantucket Red

Wow, I'm so grateful for all your feedback, praise, criticism, and ideas! You guys are great (and here I thought I should post on Gearslutz?) I did a first round of tweaks (reducing the overheads, automating down the open hats) that were immediately hated by everyone who heard them, but I think I've...

Carl, thank you for your thoughtful feedback. I really hadn't thought of submerging it in distortion. It's an interesting idea I will definitely play with, although I'm not sure how that will work with the rest of the record. Rolling off the top and pushing it back could also be interesting. I'm def...

Thanks for the replies! Unfortunately, it's a mixing problem at this point because we can't go back and re-track the drums. We used really dead sounding 70s Camber hi hats to try to tame its sibilance, but in retrospect it didn't really help much here. It did give a nice chunky closed sound. I'm pre...

Taming open hi hats

I'm working on my first full-length record with my band. As we live in apartments in Brooklyn, we decided to track in an empty house in rural VA my parents own. I did my best with treatment and placement, but we were crunched for time and ultimately couldn't spend hours testing and adjusting mics. O...

Thanks guys.

I kicked up the vocals a few dB. Here's a new version:

Nick, do you have any suggestions for giving it some cajones?

I'm definitely liking the new direction more [no offense to your songwriting]. It's a good song? just sounds like it's hidden behind the noise instead of coming from it. I'd be excited to hear where this could go with a tightened performance and mix.

Pact [Feedback Wanted]

A song about not recording :)

All feedback is appreciated! This song is from a record I'm in the process of making.

Mathieu Boogaerts / I Love You

http://www.mathieuboogaerts.com/IMAGE/PL_PHOTOS_ILOVEYOU06G.jpg I got a copy of one of Mathieu Boogaerts ' records ( J'en Ai Marre D'?tre Deux ) a few years ago from a francophone friend, and have tracked down the rest since then, completely enamored with his humor, eclecticism, melody, and simplic...

Other audio stuff: [I'm on OS X, but there are PC versions/equivalents to most of these.] I'd recommend a good audio file compressor (LAME MP3, FLAC) and metadata software (Tag) MIDI Monitor diagnoses MIDI information Audio Hijack allows you to record audio from a specific application Toast burns CD...

I'm going to add a big bump for this myself... Self is what originally got me into this stuff when I was a teenager. I'd love to hear from Matt.
