I've never used the 4047 but I do use a Michael Joly-modded Oktava MK319 for all of those jobs. As a drum overhead it's clean and clear but cranked through our Langevin DVC limiter it's an absolutely pummeling room mic.

Another thumbs up for Xaudia here - good fella - knows what he's doing - very reasonable and very quick. And actually answers emails!

Also, MoreSpaceEcho's post is the bee's knees. Lots of critical listening, making good EQ decisions, and a bit of judicious dynamic control. After reading the Katz Mastering Audio book I started trying some subtle automation of overall pre-processing track level to accentuate structural dynamics. Fo...

I think, especially if you're working on something you recorded and mixed yourself, trying to get some perspective with regards to other people's records can be very enlightening. I would say on that though, that most CDs produced in the last 15 years (including remasters) or so are very, VERY loud ...

If anyone's interested, the whole album is streaming here http://drownedinsound.com/news/4148464- ... ield-music

Beginning to think I should have put "for fans of Talk Talk, The Blue Nile and David Sylvian" in the subject. Self-promotion fail!

Why, thanks chaps! All recorded at our own place - a couple of rooms built inside an old industrial workshop unit in our hometown of Sunderland, north-east England. Nothing fancy but enough space to house a couple of pianos and record drums with a bit of distance. We had some fun keeping the main ro...

New recordings I'm very proud of, though...

...I can't take any credit for the arrangements, which really make the whole thing. My brother did a collaboration record with Paul Smith from Maximo Park - all arranged for a nine-piece band. I was lucky enough to take the lead on the engineering and I'm incredibly proud of the sound - the nearest ...

Could be worth looking at Italia guitars - the Rimini 12 looks nice http://www.italiaguitars.com/guitarDeta ... uitarId=18

I haven't played one but I have another Italia and it's very nicely made and good sounding. Not sure how widely available they are in the US though.

Hi tapeop-ers, Can't believe it's been so long since I posted that track from the third Field Music record. We've done a whole other FM record since and I'm just about to put out a second album as School of Language. This - http://www.mojo4music.com/12844/school-of-language-dress-up/ - is probably t...

I don't use it often so other folks might have better methods but I find it useful to make sure all of your tracks are exactly the same length (even if that means putting a little block of blank audio at the top and tail of tracks) before you start messing with the logic time-stretching. That way ev...

A thumbs up also to the Squier Musicmaster reissues which appeared for a short time in the very early 00s - I bought a salmon pink one brand new for ?99 and use it all the time. We call it the 'stunt' bass - slides, bends and generally silliness as standard - great fun to play.

what interface are you guys using to record? What did you use for the School Of Language recording? I love, love that album. So cool to able to ask you questions! Yay Tape Op! Oh, nothing special - the new album was all done with a focusrite 26, though if we're recording a lot of tracks in one go w...

How do you like the OktavaMod 319? I have a pair of MK-012s that Michael modified that I use all of the time and love. Haven't used any of the other modified mics that he's known for, though. It's been very useful - I don't have much to compare it to (our only comparably-expensive mic is the K2 - a...

Thanks Jeff! Really hope we can make it to Philly some time next year - still feel awful about canceling at short notice the last time we were due to play. Production-wise, this one was definitely an oddity. We made two floor tom loops (probably with a beta58 close and a nady rsm-2 ribbon above) for...
