On the 'pushing to the edge of breaking up' topic for distortion... Some of the meanest and coolest sounding electric guitar I've gotten was gained by running it through the crappy built-in speaker on an old Wollensak mini reel-to-reel deck and pushing it hard - miced up with an LDC. Something like...

I don't know exactly how I feel about this being in-tune business. Which is weird -- having absolute pitch and all, you'd think any off-key-ness would bother me outright. I guess I just like the performance to be real. I don't like when poor singers try to fix their pitch electronically so they can ...

I think lo-fi works well for some bands and not so well for others and its as simple as that....and i'm talking about on an overall level as opposed to a production technique sort of level....every band and their brother have at one point on a recording done something kind of "Lo-fiish" in one of t...

To hell with all this "shoot the drummer" nonsense. The gunshot may help fill out the sound of the kit, and accentuate the kick and floor tom, but this thread is about getting the perfect snare sound. Five words:

FILL. THE. SNARE. WITH. JELLO.

I guess I should have mentioned before that my Apex 185s have switchable patterns -- I've got both cardioid and omni capsules for it. If I'm using them to record the kick drum and bass rather than the room, I should have them in cardioid rather than omni, amirite? Also, thanks to everybody who's off...

HA, yeah DON'T let him crank the highs and scoop all the mids on the amp. Not really an issue here. He may have a cheap amp, but he's not that retarded when it comes to tone. You could try putting ghetto blaster on top of the bass cab it its too muddy/ not enough room on the floor. Got an outboard ...

Planning a recording session of sorts.

Alright, so my band is going to be doing some quite, quite ghetto recording sessions in a week or two here. We're planning on just setting up in the middle of our practice space (unfinished basement w/ concrete walls and all), positioning equipment, and hitting record. Obviously, the gear/room we've...

My Revox 2-track arrived yesterday, and another is coming soon. Now all I need is some 1/4" tape and a mixer and I'll be set (for now, and in a limited fashion). I guess the debate is sort of settled now. I just didn't think my source would actually come through for me, but now that it has, I guess ...

Generally, I only really appreciate lo-fi recordings if they're borne out of necessity. If somebody's fucking around with a four-track and that demo ends up sounding really good, why do anything else with it? (A good example of this is "I Wanna Sleep in Your Arms" by the Modern Lovers - you can find...

- Yeah, I could get better results by getting a professional engineer to record my band in a professional studio. That doesn't really help me get into recording though. Firepod and 283 it is. - I do have a DAW already; I borrowed my friend's copy of Audition 1.5 and installed it. So I guess that's a...
