I've heard that the vocals for the Radiohead track You and Whose Army were recorded in a bomb shelter.. Actually, the vocals were recorded in a different but just as interesting way: The Wire, 2001: Elsewhere, Radiohead's 'vocal science' bypassed state of the art digitalia for antiquarian technolog...

Four-track problems (sticky shed?)

(originally posted in Gear Talk because I'm a dumbass) So I just started playing around with the Teac A-3440 my band purchased the other day, and there's definitely something wrong with it but I have no idea what. Here's what goes down: - Play. Tape starts playing back extremely fast -- just margin...

So I just started playing around with the Teac A-3440 my band purchased the other day, and there's definitely something wrong with it but I have no idea what. Here's what goes down: - Play. Tape starts playing back extremely fast -- just marginally slower than FF. Freq response is limited as well. I...

Live band to four-track / bouncing issues

So my new band is trying to record a five- or six-song EP this month or next. We're planning on buying my friend's dad's Teac A-3440 (he's kept it well maintained) and just tracking to that. We would very much like to track live excepting vocals, as well, just like our previous EP was done -- though...

The drummer in my old band found some old cymbals by the side of the road once. They were the flimsiest, wobbliest pieces we'd ever heard, but after hammering their bells flat and driving a truck over them, they made a very nice pair of trash-can-lid-sounding hi-hats.

Hey masonpitzel, I'm looking to paint the entire side of my house in one stroke. Where can I get as broad a brush as you seem to like to use? Frank Sinatra, ever heard of him? Frank's songs are mixed really nicely, though. It just happens that the vocals figure prominently in the mix. To me ...

Re: Mixing so you can understand the lyrics

- The singer/bandleader considers their lyrics very precious and feels like that's the most important part of the song, therefor every single syllable must be heard. Sounds like this (hypothetical) singer/bandleader has an attitude problem. Don't cater to people with attitude problems, especially i...

These are all valid questions, but at this point I feel I should mention that any recording engineer who's concerned about their work holding up as a ringtone should be shot.
