While I agree 'not all tape decks are created equal', I would certainly use a 388 or 4-track cassette before anything digital. Teac/Tascam stuff has a certain sound to it, and I would venture to say just as much important music has been made on these kinds of decks over the last couple of decades th...

Just to stoke the fire a little bit, a cursory glance on ebay pulled these up right away. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Tascam-TSR-8-1-2-Reel-to-Reel-Tape-Recorder-/110968710157?pt=Vintage_Electronics_R2&hash=item19d640240d&nma=true&si=OV5fOHrI5Tudcg7JZdfEpxpwgsE%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675....

donny -- I'm really looking for a portastudio. can't afford a mixer + a minty half inch machine + the cost of half inch tape. You probably can. A Tascam M35 mixer for $100-$200 and a Teac 80-8 or Tascam 38 for maybe $300-$400. 1/2" tape is easier to find NOS cheap than 1/4" tape. Quantegy 406, Scot...

For less than half of that price, you could get a 1/2" 8-track machine like the Teac 80-8, Tascam 38, or an Otari. All of which are potentially better machines. The only reason the 388 goes for so much is because it's easy to use, sounds cool, and was cheap at one point in time a few years ago, so l...

instruments are not always 'in-tune' themselves, certainly every instrument is not in tune with other instruments. lack of exact pitch makes thing sound fuller. so it's hard to say exactly what 'in tune' even is if you're using a tuner ... the tuner itself can mislead. in any case, pitchy vocals can...

Regardless of the country of origin, the integrity of the company, RMGI makes a wider variety of tape that suits a wider variety of machines. ATR only makes one tape formula ... and it's not ideal for a lot of decks. Both have had QC issues, and both seem to be helpful in addressing and resolving pr...
