I'll sum it up for you: It sounds better than the equivalent Tascam MSR-16. Personally, I think the dolby C noise reduction vs. the Tascam's dbx may be the key here. I don't know about the dolby S Tascam MSR-16 machine, but I hear its better sounding. That being said. I would probably still rather h...

Exactly. Buy an upper level ie. good quality build machine (pc/mac), or better yet, build your own, keep it clean and possibly off the internet, and you are golden for a long time. Don't skimp on the graphics card....and make sure you get a dual output card (two monitors). The Presonus units are co...

Anybody know if tape guides on Fostex E16 can be rotated?
This machine I just got has really bad wear on the tape guides. I've looked at the heads as close as humanly possible, and referenced this with the great pics on the web about tape head wear, and I really don't see that the heads are worn badly. That being said, the tape guides are worn flat. I'm ta...

3M 996. 1/2" on 10.5 ampex reels. NOS.
I bought a 1/2" machine recently. Like a newb, ha. Anyways, after I REALLY inspected it, I saw the flat spots on the guides. I tested the machine with some old tape I had (and some other tape he threw in), and it MOSTLY worked. But after I saw the gnarly wear on the guides, I decided that this tape ...

Tentelometer Model T2-H20-1 Excellent $300 obo
For sale, a mint tentelometer. Shows no signs of use. With manual, case and accessories (1 oz weight, 3/32" allen wrench, 1 mil x 1" tape). I'm sure you all know how much these are new.... This model is for up to 1" tape. Here's a webpage with BIG PICS that I made (I just threw it up on my site). ht...

BNIB - 1/4" MRL cal. tape and RMGI 1/4" SM911 10.5
I bought these a few weeks ago, and never got the chance to use them. Classic studio partner blow-up. Meh. The MRL tape has never been opened. It was purchased to set up a Otari MX5050 BIII-2. 15 ips, NAB, 250 nWb/m. 5.5 minute . $95 shipped. I just paid $135 with shipping from JRF magnetics. The 25...

A few questions about Otari MX5050BIII-2
I just picked up two MX5050Biii-2 1/4" two track machines. Very excited to get them going. First off, I read that pin 3 is hot on Otari decks. True? So, just rewire my XLRs to accommodate, or rewire the machine? Second: Would 456 or equivalent tape (RMGI 911) be good for this deck? Additionally, whi...

New to R to R. A few quesitons about MSR-16.
Its been a while since I've been here. I was hoping to get a few tips or suggestions on using the Tascam MSR 16. It's a 1/2" machine. Direct Drive. I searched through the forums and found a few posts about it. These posts at least helped me decide to go ahead and buy it. I think I got an alright dea...

Japanese "Fender" or "Squire" branded Strats from the mid eighties thru early nineties are, in my opinion, BAD ASS. You can still find them somewhat cheap, but the secret is out and the prices are on the rise. I have a 1986 E series "Fender" MIJ. Best. Guitar. Ever. Some folks are of the opinion tha...

Echo Layla 24/96 (two of them)
Two of the older gen Layla's. Work just fine. PCI card(s), breakout box(es) and cable(s). Personally, I dig them. They sound good, and have flexible monitor routing. They have served me very well. Selling because I am hanging up my studio hat. They have the usual wear and tear. Meaning: rack rash. P...
