Re: headphones for mixing
To answer bobbydj, I've tried the grado sr60, 80, 125, and 325. Truth is that each level is an improvement on the one before it, at least to my ears. The 60's are good, comfortable (different earpiece design, easily the most comfortable grados made), cheap, and probably sufficient if you get used to...

Re: stupidest/worst mistake you've made in a session
I've pulled the classic trick of piping board feedback into a singer's headphones. Drops 'em straight to the ground. They get all paranoid after that.

Re: in need of a bare minimum set-up
There's a certain mentality on the boards around here, and without too much pretense, it goes like this: In the end, what you record is more important than how you record it. Furthermore there's no telling what people can do with minimal equipment, depending on patience, practice, talent, and luck. ...

Re: upright piano recording?
I'm dealing with this too - limited mic selection, upright piano, etceteras. My thought would be to either ORTF the MC-012's a bit above and behind the player's head to get more or less what he hears, XY would also work. The omni's above the sides of the piano sound good, and might combine well with...

Re: Good Mix/Monitor Headphones
What's this about the HD280 not having good lows? I think the lows are pretty nice. In my experience, it lacks a fair amount of highs. a good tracking headphone perhaps, but I wouldn't trust a mix to one alone. The higher end grados are significantly better than the HD280 in terms of sound quality. ...

Re: What are we all currently groovin' too??
I recently took the last set of of board reccomendations and have been using it to get into some different music than usual. So my cd player has the new My Morning Jacket, MBV Loveless, and Neutral Milk Hotel, as well as some samplers and Allman Brothers' "Brothers and Sisters". Also for variety's s...

Re: Taming Chaos
hrm...something about this application seems well suited to re-amping and micing the amp at a distance. Giving it some space could really help. You've probably tried all sorts of heavy eq (kill all the lows, some highs, approximate telephone sounds) and mixing it pretty far back. Part of the situati...

Re: need help in this decision. . .
prolly better for the computer forum, but I'll take a stab real quick. what I/O do you have? If you have a network jack you could opt for a small 100 base T hub and a network storage drive. The backup would take almost all night, but it would work. one possible model can be found at: http://www.dlin...

Wow. The Realist is from Ned Steinberger. I've never heard him make anything that wasn't excellent.

Re: unorthodox toys and techniques for abusing samples
I get great enjoyment out of using Buzztracker to abuse samples. There'a over a hundred free plugins, takes most vst and direct X plugins, and everything can be linked in any fashion imaginable (so long as it doesn't loop). Timestretching is tricky, but there's enough filters to completely obliterat...

Re: a SINGLE voice singing 2 note-chords
made up? nope. picked up the "Ghengis Blues" Soundtrack on a lark from a local theatre that it went through (missed actually seeing the documentary), and it's really interesting, if not difficult to listen to. I love how that particular CD shows the similarity between certain types of old-style blue...

Re: Octava ribbon mic
got a 200$ ML-52, auditioned three at the local guitar center on an acoustic guitar, two sounded like they were behind a blanket, and the third sounded really good (ergo significantly brighter than the others). took that one. However, I'm starting to wonder if getting the bright one was such a good ...

Re: (Mixing) Multiple versions of the same song
hmmm...ideally, I'd have one mix almost dry, one mixed with everything in balance and full effects (maybe light on the reverb) and one same as before but with more intermittent percussion (snare/bass/toms/etc). That stuff can get eaten in a mix, and eaten again in mastering. But I've never done that...

Re: out-of-phase recording techniques
I kind of like the idea. given that mono compatibility isn't always on my to-do list, playing with nasty phase differences sounds really fun, though tricky. I think that the difference between mono (which sounds like it's coming from inside your head with headphones) and out of phase mono (which to ...

Re: Quality Reliability Of Behringer Mixers?
Question - has anyone ever tried to fix or (god forbid) mod/improve one of these buggers? or is everything too integrated and packed too tight to even bother? I own two small mixers, and they work okay for very light duty, but I don't reccomend them unless you're a student who can't afford anything ...
