Re: Music theory

Well, learning theory before notation is like learning grammar before vocabulary. There are any number of books to help one learn notation, it being essentially memorization of symbols through repitition. And it really is only notation of "classical" notation, though there are innumerable extensions...

Re: funk bass guitar recording... that nasty clip...

Alright, I'm not an expert on recording slap bass, but for what it's worth it's time to take a step back. My reccomendation? borrow another bass and another amp. Then figure out if one of the following could possibly be fouling up the works 1) Is the bass screwed up? - change basses, and give it a s...

Re: Being insulted as an engineer

Done some live sound in a smallish concert venue in my day, and while I was never bitched out, I found things always worked better if there was some way to communicate with the band and not devolve into a wordless (more likely one directional) confrontation. It also helps to have more than one sound...

Re: A lifetime of absolutely worthless music

I keep reading this, re-evaulating my assumptions, considering my options, reading more. Is there really anything new under the sun? I really like the thoughts on "Emoting" in music being culturally sensative. As always, need to expand my horizons a bit more. Grew up listening to Webern? Yow... I li...

Re: A lifetime of absolutely worthless music

my first time being attacked for my opinions in a forum. Interesting. Well, even though my comments were directed primarily at classical modernism, perhaps what I said wasa a bit too broad - there are those who can craft (or discover) emotive music from near-random note sequences, atonal warblings, ...

Re: A/D Converter 8 Channel ADAT Light Pipe

Well, it's hard to tell if the Ultragain has true bypass - I looked at the manual and it implies that the line in is not running through the preamp. Alternately for twice the price (still a pretty good deal) is the Alesis AI-3, which is pretty much what you're wanting. 8 channels of balanced line-in...

Re: plug in compression vs real deal

Eh, I believe in limiting or heavily compressing the transients on the overheads, but I think it should be subtle (or not in effect) unless the drummer is really loud (or smacks the mic). By the same token, I'm a digital kid, for better and worse. It's all plugins for me. I don't believe in smashing...

Re: A lifetime of absolutely worthless music

explain what? okay, the essense of musical modernism (which started with Schonberg around 1900) is that there are ways to percieve and possibly appreciate music beyond which we normally consider. Perhaps mathmatically, perhaps structurally, perhaps tonally, etceteras ad nauseum. One can learn to app...

Re: Recording a JCM 800 at 10!!!!

Well, I've recorded a few loud marshalls before, and my strategy would have the 58 3-5 inches off the cone, pointed off center to taste(actually, I'd prefer a beta 57 or sm57, but the 58 will work, knowing that it's a bit heavy in the low mids). Then try different condensers anywhere between one and...

Re: lightweight stereo mic?

Got a MD and the sony mid-side mic for a trip to england recently, and it works well and seems durable (went mountain climbing through clouds in Scotland with it, no problems), though it isn't terribly hi-fi. don't know about PDA's audio capabilities though...haven't heard too much about them being ...

Re: ATTN: New Pathfinder owners..

Got mine today. No hum I can find, and only a touch of hiss as higher gain and volume. Tried out one at GC a few days before the sale, found I liked it (and didn't like the more expensive Brian May version) and I'm pretty happy so far. it's a solid sound so far. Now what to mic it with, the oktava r...

Re: Oktava ML-52: Where and How do you like to use it?

Sweet - I just bought one last night from GC (I'd been eyeballing them since they were $350, and at $200 it was really tempting). They had three on hand, two sounded like they were behind a veil (prolly too much lows/low mids) when listening to acoustic guitar, and the third sounded natural, not too...

Durwood Pickle sound like my kind of hick. Behind him 100%. If someone can go to jail or lose their life savings for the crimes of their grandchildren, then there is something terribly wrong with this country, nay, this world. And to those who say "just put out more good music, and they will come", ...

Re: BASS shinanigans

Harsh crowd. As far as I'm concerned, it's more important to be interesting than good. Les is interesting in spades, and I give him credit for that. But he has no intention of fulfilling anything resembling a traditional bass role, so comparisons with other bassists (even fronting basists) are fairl...

Re: a good mic for a loud guitar amp?

I've gotten slightly better results with a Shure Beta 57 than a stock 57 on loud marshall cabs, perhaps it fixes some of the afformentioned 57 murkiness. By the same token, I avoid single micing anything if I can help it. Ideally, I'd have a close Beta 57 (close, positioned and angled to taste), a R...
