PERFORMANCE~! Before electricity, a group of musicians had to collaborate on the mix, in real time, while performing. Ever since the portastudio has been available to impressionable musicians, the ancient and precious technique of listening has been all but lost; the post-modern protocol for live pe...

recording church organ
I have a chance to record a church, pipe organ throughout the week and I figured that I'd post here first, seeing if anyone has ever recorded one of these and has anything to say about what they learned (what to do - what not to do). What do you think?

I've tried sending the digital mixes to high-speed, high-bias, cassette tape, more than once, and both times I ended up keeping it digital and not using the tapes. I have friends who use cassette portastudios to record, and personally I like it. But I found a big difference between tracking on casse...

[It's the author again. Thanks everyone for your advice so far. For real.] What about a spectrum analyzer? Do you guys think that it's a bad idea to use one in the mixing process? I've been using them on each individual track to see if there is anything weird happening in the sub-lows, to see where ...

Mixing help, (or) throw me a fricken bone
Can anyone recommend anything to read (or to watch) on the subject of mixing? After mixing hundreds of songs throughout my life, I'm still not happy with how they sound. I think that I'd like to learn other people's methodology on EQing as well as the use of reverb and delay. I'm so bad with this st...

it literally sounds good to me and I'm enjoying it. It sounds "analog-ish" to me. I know what you mean. I spent a lot of time recording with the VS880, 16 bit w/ data compression! It was a big pain to mix with (the artifacts were amazingly terrible!), but the end results were interesting. I think t...

electric pulse in the recording
Hi everyone, quick question, I used my friend's ZOOM recorder, the little H1 model, in my most recent project. I used it for a stereo room mic to capture the guitar and vocals. The thing is, on some of the ZOOM tracks I'm getting this low-end pulse at a constant -36 dB. So I'm looking for a way clea...

I've heard about this. I know that musical temperament has changed several times since the days of Pythagoras (2500 BCE)! The most notable was in the Baroque era, when well-temperament was discovered and thoroughly experimented by JS Bach in the middle of Seventeenth century. A well-tempered organ m...

I need a new CD drive; I know nothing.
Hi everyone, the CD drive on my laptop is just awful. And what's worse is that it came that way, new (Dell Inspiron 1545). So, I'm curious to what I should look for in a new CD drive. Are there any particular qualities that would improve my burns? Like fewer errors, etc... I know nothing, seriously....
