Of course, Pro Tools and Mac probably work nicely together. I've got various OT complaints about Apple's proprietary / closed approach to computing that make it an option I'm not too keen on. Clearly, PCs suffer from the other end of the problem, that I can put together any pieces I want in any wond...

Well, working under the assumption that "compatible" hardware is just supposed to work together, I built my own. The motherboard / chipset are (nominally, at least) compatible. No dice, though.

Digi 003 Rack + Windows 7 x64 = fail

I bought a DigiDesign/Avid 003 Rack Factory from Sweetwater back in March. Many months - and many loooong support calls - later, it still doesn't work. Pro Tools will load, and gets your precious little hopes up, only to crush them by refusing to play/load a single track. Even imported .wav files wo...

Which is better: OK mic + Great pre / Great mic + OK pre

So, in my quest to upgrade my very basic home studio, I've got about a million things I want to buy, and I certainly don't have the money to buy more than a couple. And at that, only one of them will probably be any good. Most of my (computer-based) recording is solo / duo acousticish stuff. Without...

Thanks for the input, yall!

Atm, it looks like I've got it narrowed down to either the ART Tubefire, or maybe the Echo Audiofire Pre8. It'll probably depend on what my local store actually has in stock and I can go pick up in person. =)

(Firewire?) Audio interface recommendations

I've been doing my recordings on my computer for a few years, and it's finally time to upgrade past my M-Audio Firewire 410. I'm looking for recommendations on a 4-8 channel audio interface. Here's what I think I need: - Min. 4 XLR/combo inputs, so I can record stereo acoustic guitar, plus another c...

What tends to end up sounding best (to my ear, on my guitar, in my room) is to place the mic where a listener's ears would be. We're not used to hearing guitars performed a couple inches away from our faces... at least, I'm not. I like the sound of an LDC at ear-height, maybe 18-24" in front of me, ...

Bouncing hard disk mixes to tape

So I'm recording an album, in the ambient / electroacoustic / instrumental guitar vein, directly to hard disk. I'd like to magnetify my mixes a bit before they get released. How much - and how good - of an effect could I expect if I were to bounce the mixes to tape before (or during) mastering? What...
