Why do you feel the need to clip the preamp? Does it make a tone you like? If so, go for it. Are you hurting the pre by clipping it? I don't think so... Chris is right... You will get less "bass buildup" from the back wall if you place the monitors on the "short wall" so that they "fire" into the "long dimension" of the room. Try using the "rule of thirds;" that is, since the room is 18 feet deep, place the monitors about 6 feet away from the front ...

I think it is best to "play" the tape to the end, rather than "fast forward." The smooth tape pack you get in play mode is much better for long-term storage. Fast forward will cause the tape to ride up and down on the hub, causing un-equal pressure between one layer of tape and the next. Over time, ...

I use a Shop-Vac...nothing else has enough suction to really get the dust.
...put in your earplugs, and make sure the console and outboard gear are NOT powered up when you clean...I fried the power supply in a Midiverb II with a static charge from a vacuum cleaner one time...
