Re: amp modeler as effects unit

I mix with sansamps all the time, just like you describe. They are made well for what they are and they *sound good*. I tried doing this with a pod, several pods actually, and those things just blow a cow. They are cool for what they are cool for, no doubt, but I wouldnt put mixing on the list of th...

Re: any info on DIY mic preamps would be appreciated...

If you know the sound of a 1272 and you build the N72 kit correctly, it would be pretty difficult I think, for anyone to be dissatisfied with the end result. Its that good. I use the rolls boards in just about everythign I rack up. Be careful before you go DIY something like an API 312 or a Langevin...

Re: Repro Heads...

Yes, you can monitor the repro head during recording.

Yes, there is like, delay. The delay time depends on the speed of the tape and the distance between the record and play head. This is how you get that slap back tape delay sound, this is what your space echo and echoplex is doing.

Re: Bass Mic???

for an upright, try a sanken COS11 taped to the body of the bass beneath the neck combined with another mic of choice in front of the bass for air. people usually combine electric bass with a DI, so the mic choice on the cab usually is more for color behind the DI, if thats the way you are going. I ...

Re: Where to buy -db pads in L.A.?

I have been meaning to write this up as an article for tapeop for eons but dont have the time to feed myself... If you need to make a bunch of pads, a really easy way to do it is to buy a blank single rack panel punched for XLR connectors. Middle atlantic makes them and they are about $30. You can u...

Re: Huge, incredible sounding records.

man, a class A neve, you get that tchad blake low end just by turning the thing on... I think a lot of people mixing on neve's probably take great care to remove the bottom end pile up that tchad blake puts under the microscope. One of the big mysteries I have about rock music is why people love mix...

Re: why are transformers so important?

I dont have any theory to offer, but in the case of something famous like a neve 1073 or a neve 1272, the output transistor drives the audio into the output transformer and in those designs can saturate the transformer. It is that transformer saturation which is the source of the characteristic colo...
