Re: Empirical Labs Fatso

the nuke setting is just another ratio. Its *sounds* like that blanket over the mic thing with a nice veil of distortion, but it *behaves* pretty intensely. The Explosive charge on the doors of titan missle silo's would blast the 2 doors open in a fraction of a second and the doors weighed some absu...

Re: Mapex Drums experience?

we got a DW kit in the early 90's when they were still handmade to order. the drum kit at the studio is one of the best sounding kits I've ever heard. I dont think I would want to get into a jazz thing on this kit. Yeah, it would sound good, but DW has this really inescapable modern kind of sound to...

Ok, so, did he get sued over using a sample of a recording someone else made, or over reperforming some notes someone wrote on a piece of paper?

Re: AKG mics

funny, I just posted about akg mics in another thread. There is a wide debate on AKG 414's. some people like them, some people dont. I dont, but its still a valid microphone. The AKG C1000 I really feel to be one of the worst mics ever devised, do the world a favor and dont get one. I didnt care for...

Re: Strangest Studio Techniques U Ever Used?

yo, you dont get too much foreskin sound with a 160A?

I would think an 1176 to be a better choice.

Re: stapes vs. the ghetto army

people like what they like. I had both a C1000 and a C3000 and I suffered through a record back in the stone age when those were my main mics. If there was a C1000 and a C3000 on a table for 2 bucks a piece, I'd pocket my four dollars, go round the corner and buy a soda and a candy bar instead. C100...

Re: 1:1 compression why?

I would love an answer on this as well. Knee jerk answer from me woudl be "to run it through the circuit" which seems logical enough, but a distressor or 2254 on 1:1 definitley does some major stuff. Have you tried your distressor at 1:1 on vocals? Thats where that box becomes a swiss army knife. Tr...

Re: Stereo Buss Compression

The last thing I mixed was pretty much distressors across a stereo buss, a dbx 162 across another, api 2500 on another and a neve 33609 on another. Most of the record then went through an SSL 4000 when it got mastered. If I had to go with one thing for a mix buss, the way Im working now, it would ei...

Re: Empirical Labs Fatso

the brit mod is that cool. I relabing my switch "freak out". Every piece of gear should have a freak out switch. I guess they did it to emulate what an 1176 does with all the buttons in, but its pretty much in idea only. Flip the switch, and the thing just totally freaks out. If you need something o...

Re: trying to buy a mic pre and i need to know what is up.

man, the stuff on your list is really all apples and oranges. If you are in a big city, the best thing you can do for yourself is find a studio with a slamming mic pre collection and rent two hours of time. go in there with a DAT and just make a recording of all the pre's, go home and listen to them...

Re: Tube Mic Reccomendations?

The korby sounds like a good idea, however its out of my price range and Im not going to do business with VK any time soon. Ive heard a lot of good things about the lawson 47, but never actually heard one. It would be cool if there was a place you could go to hear all this stuff. guitar center... dave

Re: Tube Mic Reccomendations?

I suppose guitars are the primary focus, but Im inclined to get somethign new so I can get a second one in the future without turning over rocks to find a second one only to have totally not match at all after 30 years of aging... Ive got some c12a's which are cool, but kinda sucky on guitars. Smoot...

I sorta dug the 149 on vocals. It is really expensive for what it is, I agree. what do you tend to use it on?

Re: Empirical Labs Fatso

a fatso just has some distressor presets, more or less. If you want a really tweakable box and can afford it, a distressor is totally the way to go, hands down. While manufacturer applications are a plus, this shouldnt factor into your decision to buy a box. Because someone prints up something like ...
