Re: Click tracks. Love them/Hate them.

For me, a way better solution when tracking bands is to give a reference tempo at the top of each take and then kill it once they start playing. They’ll tend to speed up and slow down the same way in the same spots. I usually edit full band takes rather then punching in to make fixes and this metho...

Re: Mac OS and Pro Tools

Audio guy by education and now hobby. IT support by profession. Professional opinion: ALWAYS stay back at least a version or so on production machines. Avoids a lot of headaches. Heck, I'm personally running ProTools 11 and OS 10.10, and I only updated because of an interface upgrade that didn't pla...

Re: Headphones and comfort

Someone else here mentioned having a big ol' noggin... which I do as well. Wearing glasses makes it harder, since they pinch behind my ears. I find MANY over-ears too tight. AKGs are usually very good, and I like a lot of the Sony DJ headphones where comfort is concerned. My most recent headphone pu...

Re: What version of MacOS are you using & Why?

In the studio I was on Mountain Lion with ProTools 10/11 concurrent install, and stable and pretty happy. Updated my interface. Didn't play nice with CoreAudio on that old a version of MacOS, as the hardware was newer (or newer enough) than the audio drivers were. So I dove into the latest version I...

Modding a DeArmond 602 volume pedal

So I have a '60s or '70s DeArmond 602 volume pedal. I dig the look of it, it's transparent, the sweep is clean and even... The only issue is that the sweep is so small on the pot. To the point that if I have it configured so that heel-down cuts all sound, toe-down is a significant loss in volume. I ...

I ALWAYS go to an external drive. It's worth it on speed alone. I'm pretty sure their internal drives are still 5400RPM, unless you're on an SSD obviously. I've always gone FW over USB on my Macs, but with USB3 that should be less of an issue. These days I go FW for interface, and USB for drives. Ke...

Did a punk band a while back, and one of the guys played this Marshall that was impossible to record a bad sound with. 50 watt JCM800. He had an Avatar 2x12 cab, in addition to his 4x12 he played shows with. I really wish I remembered what speakers were in that cab - I know they were two different s...

I listen to tons of digital too, and for records I really like, I prefer to have both digital and vinyl. Oh, for stuff I really love, I'll buy Vinyl with a digital download nearly every time if it's an option. In the case of the White Stripes "Icky Thump," the vinyl sounds WAY better than the digit...

AAA or DDD for it's own sake seems silly these days. I turned down working with a band once because they insisted on working on tape, and the only tape machines we had access too (and no budget to rent a good one) were crap. Honestly, they touted their first album as sounding awesome because it was ...

You can also always use the headphone output for recording. I've done it before, and had it work out fine.

The answer is generally anything MIDI on USB.

I have a cheap MAudio one that works fine - just need a USB adapter (the iPad Camera Connection Kit) and power for the keyboard. The Dock Connector on the iPad doesn't really provide power over the USB port.

For wall plates I have successfully mounted 1/4" jacks in a standard coax cable wall plate before. (a la this: http://pimages.solidsignal.com/PVCWP20IVYHF_medlrg.jpg)

If you're going for it on the cheap.

Lots of beards, beer and my friend's dogs. Also, vinyl.

There is the occasional guitar thing in there too, and when the home studio is back up and running (moved house, currently painting the room), there will be more recording stuff.

Googling around - are all of those 2.5" drives? Even all of the 3.5" ones I can find (and the dead one sitting next to me on the workbench at the office) are 2.5" drives in a heat sink. Hi, I use Western Digital (WD) Velociraptor drives. They have up to 1TB now, and all are very good for audio tasks...

Recording to a 2.5" drive

So I'm looking into installing another internal drive in my MacBook Pro using one of these: http://www.mcetech.com/optibay/ I'm thinking about using a drive in that as a record drive. Obviously it needs to be fairly fast (I'm looking into a 10kRPM, but I've used 3.5" 7200s as record drives in the pa...
