another thing to try is mixing in some real percussion with the drum machine palette to massage the sounds together. a little tamborine or maracas is the teaspoon of sugar to help the robotic hi-hat go down.

pardon me if someone already mentioned this, but . . . one thing that i do quite a bit is to play back a very simple rhythm (most often with just 1 or two percussion pieces such as hi-hat/shaker, whatever) almost as a click track and play the other pads of the drum machine manually as the song conti...

The stuff is called mag stock (for magnetic stock) and was used to sync sound to picture during editing of motion pictures.
