If the room mics are only entering the computer through one channel, then they will just be mono. In order to hear them as stereo, you would need to dedicate 2 channels of your maudio card to them. Even a figure-eight mic, with both of its lobes, would still just be mono. Given your setup, if I need...

Thanks Jim. I noticed in other posts you had said that you did that and it worked well, I will def give that a shot. I know there is no way to know for sure until I try it, but since the distortion was happening in the same fashion both with and without the jumper in, wouldn't that mean that with a ...

Urei/JBL 7510A

I purchased one of these from a guy on Craigslist last week, two cards installed (8 preamps). We tested it at his place and everything seemed to be in good working order, but when I tried tracking some vocals with it this weekend it was distorting on a lot of the vocal transients. When I removed the...

How do you fix that one bass note that is way louder than the rest? Since 95% of my recording experience has been ITB, I do not have any personal advice on how to fix this in your specific situation. In the DAW world, this problem can be remedied by using surgical EQ to lower just the frequencies t...

Glad to hear it worked well for ya! Glyn Johns pair has always provided a realism to the drum sound that I could never get with other stereo techniques. Granted, its not a sound that works for all styles, but when it works it really sounds great.

The 421s could be interesting... The 414s will give you what you want. +1 I DID use sm57s as Glyn John mics for a quirky indie band I was in a while back (and that was out of necessity, not choice) and the sound was very cool and helped shape the songs into nice recordings. 421s might end up soundi...

I agree with both of those opnions on how to start a mix. I have found it helpful to, as Nick said, start with EVERYTHING playing together and spend a few minutes (5-20 or so) listening for problem areas, playing with levels and pans and mutes, etc. If there is a whole lot going on and I'm feeling a...

Composers made certain sections or music louder or softer for a reason.
Its a minor typo, but those types of things tend to turn me off or websites...

edit: Is it a typo? Re-reading, I can see how it DOES make grammatical sense that way.

Check out the Music Technology (I think it is called Music Media Production now) program at Ball State University in Indiana. It is a great program that, along with all of the recording and acoustics classes, is very music-centered: -You are in all of the same theory, history, sight-singing, etc. mu...

Unless set to pre fader, the parallel comp aux send is most definitely tied to the original track. Something I do sometimes, if I want the aux track to be post fader for whatever reason, is temporarily change the output of the main tracks to something unused, like a random bus assignment or a digita...

I'm at work right now so I can't go dig up the article. Hopefully someone will have a pdf copy of it. The only times a stereo mix is actually listened to and percieved in stereo is when the listener is on headphones, or is sitting inbetween two speakers and actually listening to the music. With that in mind, mono can be a good way to focus the production more on the heart of the song. There was a di...
