Re: Does anyone use overheads?

Huh. Seems like y'all just like the way they sound. I mean, I'm being a little dramatic - I'm almost always using overheads to glue things together and get a picture of the cymbals / natural top end from the skins - but I can count on one hand the number of times I've pulled up the overheads by them...

Does anyone use overheads?

I mean, really. This is sort of embarrassing, even! Maybe it's funny. But - I've been making records professionally for a good long while now - I can usually get the drums sounding pretty good - and so many techniques I've read about or seen other engineers use have clicked into place over time. But...

Re: Help Mixing Shakers

The Piñon coffee from Trader Joe's. Empty about 2/3 of it out into another container, then gaff the lid back on. Best mellow shaker sound in the world. And it's delicious!

Re: Help Mixing Shakers

Since nobody's touched it yet - a bit of parallel distortion can be just the thing for shakers in a dense mix. I find that a compressor/limiter fast enough to blunt the attack transient(s) of a bright shaker can often end up flattening the sound in a really not nice way, especially as the recovery t...

Taking care to ensure that the monitoring situation is dialed, pleasant & compelling for the musicians (especially when tracking live with isos!) is a huuuuuge part of the process that is all too often neglected - it's an extra 10-15 minutes during setup to go around and listen to each headphone mix...

How does it sound in the other room? How does it sound in the other room while I'm eating a sandwich (in the other room)? That's important.

A very cool buzzsaw-y distortion for shouty vox (or any number of other things) can be had by opening up the output and then cranking down the peak limiter on a 166 or similar so that it's constantly engaged... never found much use for that limiter in its intended role, but I love this trick. Awesom...

Studio sale - good stuff, cables, gear &etc

Hey all, Going through the closet and trying to get some unused gear into good hands. I've checked out everything I'm listing here, and it's all in good shape and ready to rack and use. I'm setting prices well below the going rate because Tape Op is awesome and I dig this community. Hope people can ...

Doesn't really make much sense to me - it's a bit like saying 'polyphonic stereo' or something like that, no? As in - there's nothing about any EQ I know of that's tethered to any particular tuning system - it's just cycles per second. Either a pitch falls within the band, or it partially does, or s...

But now you can't get an 'angry' drum sound in there... because of the tie dye... right? Everything comes out sounding really optimistic?

Good to see you back on here, Jon! This is an interesting post. I've been feeling similarly - although one thing that's proven invaluable in this regard is sitting in &/or assisting on other producer's sessions at Kingsize, when I can be around without harshing the vibe. I feel as though 2 lessons h...
