Re: Hotel Earth studio 1 build diary
Would love to see some more screen shots of your sketchup or whatever CAD imaging you did. For instance, I'd love to see how the ceilings are working out between the two inner leaves, since i'm guessing the third/outer leaf isn't part of the isolation equation. Sure! The ceilings aren't in the sket...

Re: Hotel Earth studio 1 build diary
Thanks for the kind words everyone! I will keep the updates coming : ) Oddly I feel like this is the best things have felt in years in terms of opening large tracking rooms - I have more and more people interested in working on tape, and big purpose built rooms & great mics / front end equipment are...

Hotel Earth studio 1 build diary
Hi all! This is the build diary for Hotel Earth studio 1 in Los Angeles. This studio has had many incarnations over the past 15 or so years, each getting a little more 'real.' This time around, circumstances conspired to deliver the perfect warehouse space & an incredibly generous deal on a Neve 805...

A subtractive mindset can be more interesting with these, though it isn't most people's first intuition.

Re: "always on" talkback
I'm curious if pro musicians are still mostly using headphones in the studio, vs. their own custom-molded IEMs from the concert world. It's a lot easier to pop headphones on and off, for one thing. IEM users are more used to having an ambience/audience mic as part of their feed. Wacky idea - engine...

"always on" talkback
Hi all, I have always been frustrated by the barrier to communication imposed by talkback toggling & imperfect pickup of musicians tucked away in distant corners or booths. Freelancing at a bunch of different studios over the years, I've improvised just about every common solution under the sun to t...

They are also extremely handy to have around if you or the band run out of snacks

Re: Plug-in suggestions for the minimalist studio
Did Jesco Lohan have a hand in the trap design? That looks like his work. How does it sound? Nope! Wonderful Berlin-based company called Kiss Your Ears. They're fairly new and did a terrific job for about 1/3 the cost I would have expected coming from Los Angeles! The extreme low end is constrained...

Re: Another dreaded clocking thread
Hey, no problem - I'm happy to advocate for any position I hold, but the manner in which it came up seemed kind of odd - I'm sure you can understand. The Orion does sound great! I would have zero hesitation about tracking and mixing entire records with only that interface (and did exactly that for m...

Re: Another dreaded clocking thread
Yeah, the two-computer solution may be the thing longer term. I've thought about it - will have to see how this round goes. I suppose there's a certain extra fussiness factor implied by that move - not necessarily an unwelcome one, but, as they say, the first step is admitting that you have a proble...

Re: Another dreaded clocking thread
Thanks all! Digitaldrummer, that was pretty much what I feared - kind of hoping someone with some deep tech knowledge on the convertor side of things would come along with a reason why one way was decidedly better than another. The frustrating thing here is that it's often only after many hours or e...

Another dreaded clocking thread
Hey all! I have a very practical question that I’m hoping one of y’all can offer some guidance on. Sidestepping the whole nightmare external clocking vortex (to keep it brief, yes I have heard digi converters sound markedly better when clocked externally but this is a known design flaw, in general t...

Re: Is it safe to set a tape echo on its side?
This will be utterly unhelpful I'm afraid, but nonetheless: I was tracking a record several years ago where one of the guitarists had an Echoplex as part of his pedal rig that was more or less always on. The join on the loop was a bit funny, and would make a little sound every time it passed over th...
