Re: unclean electricity?

My advice? 1) Make sure you're using balanced cables with all the gear that have balanced connections. (Maybe check out the Rane "interconnect" document to make sure you're doing the unbalanced connections properly. https://www.ranecommercial.com/kb_article.php?article=2107 ) 2) Tear your setup comp...

Re: D/A Converters

It will change the sound. Either of the ways you discuss would be different from each other, too. What are you trying to achieve? What are the converters in the "CD burner?" They're probably something. So getting different converters to put in front of the cd burner (if it has digital ins) would not...

Re: bass drum mic - front or back?

I've removed my post, and I suggest others consider doing the same. No, no, no. I don't want to spoil anyone's fun. Especially a fellow drummer. And I don't want history revised. It's just these times. But I'm not steamed up or triggered over this. I just wanted to put my perspective down for the r...

Re: bass drum mic - front or back?

This thread makes me sad.
I thought this was a safe space.
Anti-drummer sentiments are real and can be hurtful.
We've seen where violent rhetoric leads.
I'm not even kidding.
I love you all.
But can you refrain from discussing how you would best assault me?

Re: bass drum mic - front or back?

One of my favorite things is to mic the beater side and the resonant side (if no hole) and hard pan them. It's like having your head inside the kick drum. In a good way.

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

Allen and Heath GL2400 I would just ask to delete my console help thread, but there's some handy maintenance tips in there for any to refer to. I shall repair my Soundcraft no more..... (and maybe repair an A&H instead). Whatever, I've got mixing to do! My, new to me, A&H GL2400 has been a revelati...

Reminds me of this hack...

And also of the time last year when I booted up my old PowerComputing Mac Clone running OS 9. It took a couple of minutes.

I didn't know this was a thing, but with all the legal weed out there, I understand.

My advice:
Just say "Woah! Dude!" a lot.
Eat Dorritos.
Talk endlessly about things that you'll never do or that will never happen.

Re: Choosing drum overheads for small room

Cool, yeah I mostly do my own version of GJ too, just wanted to try something different. Hey MSE, The quest to find some higher fidelity in my mic locker led me to dust off my TapeOp omnis that I haven't used in about 10 years. I was looking at them for vocals, but I decided to try them on the drum...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

picked up a 1970's Pioneer SR-202W "reverberation amplifier". It's a consumer device meant for home stereo use. So far I swapped out the RCA jacks (which were wonky) on the input and output that go straight to the reverb only. Put some 1/4" TS in there instead. There are also Tape A and Tape B inpu...

Re: Choosing drum overheads for small room

Hey Snarl, I actually want to try that next time I'm recording drums, what do recommend as a starting point for placement? Thanks! Sorry for the delay. I only have one device that I can post to tapeop from. And I don't really have a good answer for you. It's been years since I tried them. I haven't...

Re: Choosing drum overheads for small room

Make sure you give underheads with the omnis a try.

For me it would all depend on the sound you're going for and what you're hearing when you're moving the mics around. Like on some songs a kick drum mic between the snare and kick drum is all you need.

Re: Lost in the wilds of lo/mid-fi -- your thoughts please.

I gotta say, I'm realizing that gear is a huge part of this. I bought a new mixer and recorder this year that are higher fidelity than anything I've ever used before and my recordings are higher fidelity. Like mind-blowingly higher. You can only do so much with audio that's been put through bad circ...

BK Butler Tube Driver (incorrectly called a "Blue Tube" in another thread) has been great for me for the past 20 years or so.
