Re: unhyped kick drum mic

Interesting - i have used a Stapes omni here and liked it a lot but curious how/where you'd place the PZM to mic the reso head? This was in a tiny, roughly triangularly shaped room, the last I tried it. So your mileage might really vary. I think putting the pzm on the wall opposite the bass drum wo...

Re: unhyped kick drum mic

I keep wanting to chime in on this thread, because I've been recording kick drums (usually my own) for 35 years now. And my most recent major change in my studio was the result of frustration trying to record marching bass drums in stereo. It caused me to chuck my entire mixer and get a new one. I'm...

I gave the mixer to Free Geek. I still have the snakes though if anyone needs them. I guess I'm willing to ship if buyer pays shipping. Make an offer!

Re: Time for some home studio upgrades...help me spend $10K

I'm going to do my broken record routine and say "room treatment and monitors". It's not sexy (to most people) but much less than $10k will get you some great speakers in a treated space. How else will you judge if your other purchases are moving you in the right direction sonically, or not?

Re: How long does everyone keep the boxes your gear came in?

I keep the boxes for things that I shlepp often and/or leave in storage predominately. I've got two mixers in cardboard boxes and original styrofoam. One's a Bose Xtramixer I bought used in the 80's. I gigged with it like that as a teenager, boxing and unboxing it each time. And I'm doing it again w...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

Hi there, long-time Tape Op reader, first time message board poster. This seemed like the right thread to say hello, and mention the new toy. I play a little guitar, and for several years have been reckoning with a 15w Rivera Venus 3 amp, which sounds lovely, but has never been happy in the extra b...

Re: Portland: FS: Tascam M-1600 MIxer w/requisite DSUB->rca snakes

I will straight up give this to a local Tapeopper if you have a legit use for it. It might make a good board for newbie recordist or something. Or for some sort of installation? I don't want to give it away just to see it back on CL though. Any takers?

Re: connecting turntable to console

Some turntables have built in PHONO PREAMPs. Some have a switch to switch it on or off. The switch on one of my turntables is under the actual turntable, you have to lift up the mat and then spin the table until the switch appears in a hole in the table. If yours has that you can plug it straight in...

Re: Upping my vocal recording skills

Don't forget the psychology of the situation. You might get a cooler sound using what they're familiar with rather than using the best ever whizbang gadgets that the kids have these days. Especially in terms of arrangements. You might want to at least try recording it the way they practice it. Rathe...

Re: Gift card burning a hole in my pocket.

A Guitar Center guitar lesson might be amusing for an hour.

I'd look through their used shit. Or buy a bass drum head.

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

Allen & Heath GL2400-24. As recommended by someone on TOMB (sorta, they said GL2800). Not even set up yet. I haven't been this excited about a piece of gear in a long time. WTF is the matrix for in a self-recording context? There's shit about this board I barely understand. Gonna go set it up... Th...
