Re: lap steel vs. pedal steel
Hey Blu! I had the pleasure of having my first experience with a lap steel end up on a recording. This is literally the first time I ever picked up a lap-steel. I did about 6 takes and edited something together. God help the poor sap that will have to approximate this live: http://www.leprecore.com/...

Re: Recording Violin and Cello
I like ribon mics on those. You might consider a royer 121 or an sf1. Great sounding mics and they handle the bow well. You'll get good room sounds from them as well b/c they are figure of 8 mics.

Re: Guitar tone
I like tele's through medium size fender amps - vibroverbs and deluxes. I think it's the hugest guitar sound. Like bedhead, or echo and the bunnymen going further back. those single note, slightly distorted leads just rip right through the mix and sound huge.

Re: svt clone?
the big (new) sunn bass head (not good with model names) is supposedly more or less a printed circuit board solid state rectified rumble bass. I played a rumble head once, and I wish I bought it. it was really expensive, but good lord that thing sounded good. I liked it better than all 3 of the orig...

Re: Hunting for an acoustic...
I'm a big fan of the baby martins. the d15R and the 000-15 in particular are cool as hell. I've got a D42Koa and a 000-17, and a friend has the D15R. I've recorded all of them and the D15 definitely holds it's own. In solo sections, the d42 is clearly richer, but the difference is less than I would ...

Re: boutique amps??? what about boutique guitars/basses
as far as basses, I do really like the lakland basses. Not so much the stingray based models, but the fender clones. It seems harder to find good old basses than guitars. These things sound like fenders but don't have any dead spots on the neck. They even avoid the gratuitously ugly headstock of so ...

Re: boutique amps??? what about boutique guitars/basses
being a tele guy, i've never found a need for boutique guitars. I don't think that there is as much difference between finding a good used fender and the fancy knockoffs that I never like as much.
that being said, these are really cool:

Re: Please recommend books to help me learn more about recor
uhhhhhhhhhhhh, THE TAPE OP BOOK, this board, and some guide for hip-bone connected to thigh-bone stuff is all you need. There's lot's of books on home recording that would be a good reference, which have been mentioned above.

Re: gear and minimalism
i would do it one mic in a room style. I would find the best room I could and do the whole thing live. I love good one-mic recordings, and since we're talking minimalism here, that would seem to be the ultimate minimalist set up.

Re: whats your fav recording right now, or some anyways
fruit bats - mouthfuls. what a great record. sounds really good. brian deck recorded it, and he's done some of my favorite records - califone, red red meat, loftus. the drums remind me of sea change a little, and those drums are amazing. If I could get that drum sound on purpose, a happy engineer I ...

Re: Boutique amps
yeah, I remember that matchless bass amp. It was like a b15, but, well, it's heresy, but, better. If I could go back in time I would sell my soul to get one, it was that good. I also regret not getting fender's rumble bass when it was around, as that sounded incredible as well. oh well. I have a vic...

Re: Bob Dylan the plagiarist
there's this literary technique, it's called allusion. is anyone who attempts to cast a biblical story in song a plagerist? do you all know for a fact that dylan wasn't under the impression that the liner notes would give credit to the japanese author? lots of people have written songs adapting, isp...

Re: CD packaging alternatives, TapeOp style
look at this picture, then think about your packaging materials. http://www.splendidezine.com/reviewinfo.html it seems so obvious to me that I don't understand why bands actually send out promo materials in normal manila envelopes. you're so creative with your own music, why not extend that to your ...

Re: Mackie UAD-1
I've had mine (uad-1) for about a year and am very happy with it. I have a Dual Vocal Combo and an Avalon 737sp, so if I want to compress on the way in, them's will be the choices. I monitor (and mix) through a console, so there's no reason I couldn't insert and outboard compressor on the monitor ch...
