Sometimes the artist gets it right and sometimes they don't. Sometimes there are ego's involved... as said you can make a suggestion, but in the end it's their call.

Having a artist/client sign a piece of paper seems a bit to forward and pretentious to me.

There are many places that will do bulk cd's on a spindle (should be under $1 each). Ask if they will shrink wrap supplied artwork or you can assemble them yourself and out source the shrink wrapping separately.

Seems like it would be pretty easy to track to "both" tape and DAW at the same time. No?

That way you can decide which sloppiness is preferred later...
