i always start with overheads, front of the kit mic(s) if i have them, then close mics in no particular order. so far this post is the same as most others, but i wanted to say that i always add the distant/ambient mics last after i've brought up the other instuments, otherwise i can never figure out...

the thing is that cymbal bashing can sound great with the right drummer live, but it never sounds good on recording. that's because microphones don't work like human hearing, the only mimic it. "recording is a lie." as mr. crane once put it, and most people are just trying to make their recordings m...

on a separate topic from the drums - are those vocals auto tuned? i'm hearing some strange warbling qualities on the word "that" and so on. just curious if i can hear auto tune like i think i can. drums are sounding better than the first sample :)

have quite a bit of experience recording 'hardcore' kick drum, and what seems to get that tight sound more than mic choice is dampening inside the drum. even with one of those beater heads with dampening ring built in, i might place a pillow or whatever pushed right up against the beater head until ...

i got all caught up in my blandishing, and forgot to mention this thread that was really useful to me, especially joel hamilton's compression tip for room mics: http://messageboard.tapeop.com/viewtopic.php?t=61733&sid=5bc4c5b10e889db44cdae31b8f725773 the only luck i've ever had with 'coaching' a dru...

i'm sure i'll still butcher this mix no matter what, but i'm so elated to get a kick drum recorded that would sound just fine without 3,000 db cut at 500 hz.

Recording related injuries

After sitting on a 1x12 speaker cabinet for 5 hours instead of a chair yesterday, I severely pinched a nerve in my lower back. I can't even walk, just sit up really straight or lay on the floor with a pillow under my knees. Anyone else suffered any recording induced maladies? - Tinnitus, electrocuti...

Mixing a bad recording is easy

After spending years listening to all the painfully practical 'trust your ears' and 'don't record it until it sounds good in the room' wisdom on this board, I've finally done a 'good' recording (in a basement, no less!). The room mics, snare, kick drum, toms, overheads, bass, guitars, etc. - they al...
