Hi Rob I (mostly) did the Black Lion specified mods on my RP220. They spec a Lundahl LL1530 transformer for the input. I actually ended up using a couple of Jensen transformers that I already had from a previous failed attempt to design and build my own tube preamp. They worked but significantly rai...

That would require a synchronizer. Like tape machines I don't believe any one manufactures them anymore. It requires laying SMPTE time code down on a track on both tape machines (you loose two track for audio recording). The snychronizer controls the tape speed of one of the machines keeping alignme...

I've been using the East-West Silver Strings package. It was my first foray in a dedicated orchestra sample playback package. It was around $200.00 when I got it. For what I do it has a very usable selection of articulations for violin and cello (as well as other instruments). I would like to have m...

I started with Cakewalk 9 back in the day and did roughly every other version upgrade through Sonar 8. I did the upgrades because I liked the added functions. While it was not perfect I never had any real issues. Starting with 8.5 and then to X1 I had major issues including having my computer consta...

I laughed, I cried, I am purple with envy. What am amazing way to spend your 50th birthday! Other then the Parker guitar it looks like you used very Beatles era instruments and gear. That must have been a blast. It sure looks like you had fun. I enjoyed the songs by the way and Happy Birthday.

I vote for a Shure M67 four channel mixer. They are noisy, distorted, overload easily and have a limited frequency response..... but in a really cool way.

I don't know if this will be useful, but Chris Ronan Murphy did a comparison including two of the preamps you are inquiring about. http://ronansrecordingshow.com/2009/10/3-mic-pres-under-500-black-lion-audio-true-systems-and-fmr-audio/ I have a ISA1 and it has become my default "clean" preamp. It be...

I would suggest checking out the Hypercardioid Audio Technica ATM650. You can easily find then for under $100. I use it a lot on snare and have had good results on guitar amps as well. It has a better high end response and is less wooly than the SM57 but has less of a midrange scoop than the i5. It ...

I am currently reading "Zen and the Art of Mixing" by Mixerman. There is a bunch of great information about all aspects of mixing and I would definitely recommend the book. The author has a strong point of view and I don't agree with everything he says but I have learned a lot and I am really glad I...

Hey Recording Engineer I like the ATH-M50's and have had good results using them as a secondary reference and for tracking. They do seem to have a strong low end, maybe to much. They do not seem overly bright to me, I like the high end. I have not had any experience with the other headphones you lis...

I definitely had a positive result burning in four new sets of cheaper Sennheiser HD202 headphones that I had gotten for recording my last band project. I ran two at a time playing music and noise for around 4 days each. Since I had burned in ones and non burned in ones side by side I could do a com...

I just got a new Boss RT-20 Rotary Assembly and Pigtronix Philosopher King compressor, sustainer, distortion and polyphonic amplitude synthesizer. The Philosopher King is cool but the RT-20 just rocks my world. I have just never liked modulation type effects on guitar until now. This thing just take...

Even thought it does not have a tube the M-Audio DMP-3 is a very viable contender. It's a great clean little dual channel preamp that can be had new for well under $200.00. Also the Golden Age Pre 73 has a lot of gain and while it is solid state it does have input and output transformers, which have...
