The fact that different sized holes can make them tunable is pretty amazing. Let's hope they can figure a way to expand that frequency range.

Nothing Can Hurt Me: Big Star

Just saw the Big Star documentary last week. My wife is a huge fan, I like them, but not like she does. I have to say that the film is really good. Also lots of good gear porn. If you see it after reading this, then tell me it doesn't seem like it was underwritten by Hiwatt amplifiers. Anyway, if it...

Most gear that is DC supplied does not, in fact, care whether it is polarity correct. Some things are very important to get polarity correct like refrigerators. Occasionally, the improper polarity on a metal appliance will cause the casing to become electrified. And some light fixtures will become e...

People, I keep telling you, I work in one of the most design forward buildings in America. The lamps that kept the bulk of the showrooms that feature a fantasy land of furniture and other assorted products are these: http://acculamp.acuitybrands.com/specs.aspx The color rendition is great. Right on ...

There are many, many references online for National Electric Code (NEC). As far as how many rooms you are carving out, as long as you're not creating a new occupancy (say an in law apartment), it is moot. Of course you should check on codes. But as has been mentioned, build it right. Overbuild it, e...

2 guys acoustic

New project coming up in the home studio. I have two guys coming in who have been playing together since God was a boy. Two acoustics, not sure if they both sing or not, but I'm planning on it. My selection of mics is pretty limited, so here is what I have, and I'd like some input as to what I shoul...

Let's just say I'm very good at my job as an electrician in a very forward thinking, design oriented building. I've installed light bulbs most people didn't know existed. I try to keep up on trends.

I'm not Dr. Who. I'm Dr. Whom.

The glowing bit on an LED lamp is called a light engine.

Not all lamps are like that. I can't speak for the Cree lamps specifically, but the building I work in moved dozens of showrooms last year and offered a fantastic deal on LED lamping for their new locations. We mostly used a brand called Acculight. I would pay you cash money if you could tell me the...

Are there any archivists out there?

I have a friend who is a pro archivist and I will inquire about audio. She mainly deals with print but has some fascinating insights into those mediums.

Her bumper sticker? Archivists make it last longer.

Nice.

No this is what he says it is. He's actually a very good friend who builds things like this in his spare time. I'm getting it for cost of parts in exchange for some electrical work at his house. I've never really used outboard compressors, let alone vintage ones. Looking for thoughts on the utility ...

Sta Level

A friend of mine has built a circuit modeled version of a Sta Level compressor. I do some recording with friends and let's just say we have unpredictable levels from person to person. I'd use this equipment more as a limiter than anything, which it does phenomenally well. He's willing to sell it at ...

For digital options, I've heard solid state hard drives are good. It's hard to tell about their longevity yet, but they don't need defragging and their read speeds are pretty great. They are expensive when compared to magnetic drives, though. I should say that I do not have any personal experience w...

Maybe the fireworks should stay out of doors. The padlocked exits didn't help matters either. I think the video from the Station fire shows how quickly a place like that catches fire and spreads like crazy.
Just horrifying.
