Modded Apex 460 Distorting

Well, this fits into the "fixing broken shit" realm of this forum :) Background: modded a 460 about two years ago. New transformer, new capsule, new tube, replaced a few of the caps (forget which ones), left the cathode follower in place, didn't do anything to the power supply. Happiness and sunshin...

Huh...weird. Pin 2 is not exactly broken...but sure doesn't work. Checking resistance from pin 2 input to pin 2 output, it jumps all over the place - probably just because it's intermittently losing the connection completely, and my multimeter is showing me a rolling average? It goes from ~3ohms, wh...

There are much better components available for that particular Chinese mic. I replace the capsule with a Peluso CEK-12, replaced the transformer with a BV11 from Dave Thomas of AAMicrophones, replaced the tube with a NOS 12AY7, removed some filtering capacitors (C5 and C6, maybe?) and replaced anoth...

That's my hope - the cable seems a little shoddy (it's the one that came with the Apex 460) especially at the ends. Just feels like the connector isn't doing much in terms of "strain relief"

Troubleshooting Apex 460 Mod

Hello, all! Earlier in 2009, I did an Apex 460 mod, very, very pleased with the results. However, it's developed an issue recently, and I've reached my limit of "knowing where to start" Granted, it didn't take long to get there :) Here's the deal: it's omni. All the time. I was expecting that this m...

Absolutely. It's always easier to "fix" someone who fucks up with confidence :)

Thought about that...I'm not so good on the "melodic" instruments, though ;)

The new built-in tuning in Cubase 5 makes this a breeze. For me. YMMV :)

Trick: Using tuning to avoid having to use tuning :)

Apologies if this is old hat. Ran into a sticky bit last night - harmonies that weren't in the chords, singer was having a rough time hitting it, but really didn't want to resort to some sort of auto-tuning. We recorded a few takes of the whole thing, then took a few minutes to tune the snot out of ...

I guess the issue I have with that is that I still want it to sound dynamic, except without actual dynamics :) I was sorta looking for tricks like "duplicate the vocal track, make compression settings for the quiet and for the loud, and then switch between the two" or something like that. Also, just...

Lemme rephrase somewhat... I have an excellent mastering guy, Garrett Haines (of TapeOp infamy), lined up for this project. I have the utmost confidence in him and his abilities. I just want to maximize my chances. The real issue, at the moment, is that everyone I ask to listen to the tune comes bac...

Mixing songs with dramatic dynamic differences

Hello, Imaginary Internet Friends! I'm nearing the mix stage for a project, and as I'm listening to roughs, I find myself cranking one song at the beginning, only to run for the dial when it gets to the end. At points, the song is simply gentle acoustic and soft singing. At the end, there's full ban...

Yeah, it's a power supply for a router - not exactly high-end gear.

I know this is a stupid question, but is there a such thing as a "quality" wallwart?

I'll have to go through the Great Box o' Warts tonight and see what else I can try.

I'm using Schope, running at 24/96. Not exactly a real oscilloscope, but gets me in the ballpark. http://hotelmorrell.com/studio/PM1000%20Issues/Full.png As you can see, the spike at 2230 is significantly louder than the others. There is no spike at 1115. Here's a zoom in on the lows, you can see th...

Ringing in preamp circuit - PM1000

Hey guys - Recently bought some racked PM1000s from someone on the board, and either they've started a new behavior or I'm just finally noticing - there's a high-pitched noise coming out of them, even if the mic gain is zero, even if there's no mic attached, with or without phantom power turned on. ...
