Cool, thanks! There's 4 relays on this, I had tired switching them around and it didn't help, plus record lights all work so I don't think it's that. Solenoid plunger sticking from rotting foam sounds quite likely, actually, so I'll check that out. I tried joining that Ampex recordist list that Teac...

Who out there knows Ampex 440's?

I'm having a transport issue with an Ampex 440. Sometimes the brake on the take-up reel doesn't apply when coming to a stop. I'm vaguely pointing my finger at a large cap that's next to the motor. Does that sound like a reasonable culprit? Alternately, I don't understand solenoids very well. Could t...

Sorry, I don't - but would love to know more! You should suggest to Tape Op that they track him down for an interview!

Nice vibe and atmosphere, and mic choices - it's shaping up pretty sweet, I dig it! A Junior Kimbrough cover, is it not?

Your 666 and 664 sound way different than my 666. Mine's all 500-800 midrange. A cool effect-y mic, but not as clear sounding as yours. Hmm...

Nice sounds - post more when there's drums! And just to take the subject of your post literally - you COULD really "do it all" on the tape machine, no DAW. Drums submixed to stereo on two tracks, guitar on a third, and vocals/solos on the fourth. Or Drums AND guitar submixed to two tracks, a third f...

Good info, Brad.
Curious if you've noticed bias settings being much different between 900 and 911 tape? My bias settings seem to remain pretty constant when realigning for different tape. Modern tapes, while less reliably manufactured than older stock, have seemed fairly forgiving on bias levels.

I see this was a month ago, so you've probably already done the recording, but I believe you're talking about using a +9 tape on a machine set up for +6. You won't notice any difference at all. It just means you're not taking advantage of the full level the RMG900 is capable of. You could hit the ta...

It sounds like you're happy with the how the bass is filling out the low end, but the bassist himself isn't hearing enough of the notes he knows he's playing. For whatever reason, 1k seems to be a pretty magic frequency for bringing note clarity out of a bass. Try boosting that.

I've dealt with Condor Electronics in Seattle a couple times. They've seemed to know what they're doing with my machines, though I've heard other people grumble about them, I think related to guitar amp work. Don't know if they do outcall, might just be in-shop work. Calvin used to have an outside g...

Topic: Question re: cutting vinyl and wildly out of phase things

Phase issues on vinyl are only problematic when it comes to low frequencies. Since the left/right stereo information is carried on the opposing walls of the groove, when high energy information - i.e. low frequency - is out of phase, the needle can't respond quick enough and it freaks out and jumps ...

I recall reading an interview with Greg Sage (Wipers) where he says he prefers to go unbalanced whenever possible because balancing transformers flatten out the punch in signals, and everything sounds like it's hitting softer. Of course he also always uses a lot of tube equipment, which can be less ...
