tapes.com has type II high bias cassettes, the longest ones they have are 50 minutes (per side) and they're $0.95 each. not too bad.

this is what I would recommend

I might be wrong but I'd be surprised if all the buzz was just because of the unshielded wooden box. I'd focus or the wiring first and make sure that's solid before you find a whole new enclosure.

ATR tape is not a 456 equivalent. 456 is +6 tape, ATR is +9. if you're machine can handle the higher levels, you can probably get better noise performance from the ATR. But you can totally get away with running +9 tape at lower (+6) levels, you just probably won't get all the benefits. it will also ...

Yamaha PM-1000 Channel Strips

I've decided to part out my Yamaha PM1000 mixing board. I'm keeping a few pieces but everything else is up for grabs. It hasn't been in regular use here but I did go through and test it and everything seems to be in working order. Great for DIYers to rack up as preamp/EQ strips, or as parts for some...

got an MCI JH-110a 1/4" 2-track machine. in sort of working condition. More for the purpose of fixing it up and learning about it, rather than actually using it (I don't have any room in my studio, so it's hanging out next to my washer and dryer).

a few questions about some little details of this build, since I've been thinking of doing the same:

how deep is the case you used?
what are the specs on the power transformer (VA rating and secondary voltage)?
what tools and parts did you use for those Molex connectors?

I sent mine here: http://www.akgmicrepair.com/

He did a good job and was pretty quick about it. He was also upfront about what work might need to be done and how much it would cost.

checked it out today and managed to rotate all the guides that are attached to the head block. hopefully that helps. Talked to Jim Finch and got some helpful tips, including how to get the capstan shaft properly cleaned. unfortunately the Tascam parts department no longer carries replacement tape li...
