Tascam MS-16 woes

I've been using a Tascam MS-16 here in the studio for the past couple years, and while I like it a lot, I've been having some trouble with it. the problems I've been having are with tape shedding for unclear reasons. The tape I'm using is ATR and RMGI stuff so it's not an Ampex sticky shed thing. It...

I've noticed with bass players especially, they often will make clicks and clacks on the pickups, often creating noises that interfere with the production. this sound is the worst. maybe I'm being closed-minded but I doubt many bass players are actually trying to make that awful clacking sound. was...

for future reference, I've purchased high voltage axial caps from here before, they seem good:

not to be "that guy", but what tubes did you like as a replacement?

cool, i was curious about the similarities. I'm tempted to DIY it, but not knowing a lot about compressor circuits, I'm not sure I want to dive into that yet.

So, why not use some distortion in tandem with your compression? or on an aux send to dial in some grit? I've done that too, with some success (and i should probably do it more), but in my experience a distortion pedal just ends up sounding like a distortion pedal. it's something i'll definitely ke...

I built the 1176 Rev D from a Hairball/mnats kit. it's pretty great! I know "buss compressors" aren't really a whole separate thing, I was just thinking of them as a vague category defined by what people commonly use and like, not by any technical specifications. It's good to know that it's not abso...

Let's Talk About Buss Compressors

I'm looking for ideas and recommendations for hardware stereo compressors that will likely get used mostly as buss compressors (drum buss, vocal groups, etc, not so much on the 2-buss). I don't mean to make this into too much of a GS thing, but I'm just sort of unaware of what's out there and what's...

Plus if I get rid of it... I could probably see and understand the circuit I am working on better. yes. like I said it might be worth getting the first one working without tearing it all out, it'll give you some faster gratification and you'll be able to hear the thing in action before spending mor...

once you get the first channel working, +1 to doing a full tear down of the other channel and building it up from scratch. that's what I ended up doing and am learning a lot about tube circuits in the process. once you get everything taken out of there and cleaned up it seems like a decent platform ...

putting together a homemade Harmonic Percolator pedal. just have to drill the case and assemble. so far I'm not totally convinced this pedal is so great, but I used sockets for some of the parts, and added trimpots to adjust the bias point and see how it sounds then. also realized the Akai M8 circui...

+1 for the hairball kit. I'd also say, if you think you might eventually want another channel, just build your first channel into an enclosure made for two channels, to save space later. I sort of regret not thinking of that before i built mine.

yeah i was going to say, it might be cool to just get a super cheap consumer-style r2r (Teac seems to be most common) on craigslist or something. that will give you a taste of the analog mix down workflow, and will probably sound interesting.
